How much is "About 2" really?
So last week I was supposed to be working on spidermath 2, and at lunch I noticed something weird about the numbers on a can of soup.
I thought, oh, grocery store applied math is always useful to share, I'll just quickly make a little video for my second channel or something. Let me just write down this idea...
and 10 hours later I came out of my video-writing trance with a 10-minute script draft and a bowl of ramen.
Winnn!
On the other hand, it's yet more proof that I am incapable of making a video in less than a week, no matter how supposedly simple. But I enjoyed really digging in to the soup conspiracy vibes, and I also hope it comes in handy for those of you who teach beginning algebra!

Related fact: Per US federal regulations, non-alcoholic (NA) beer "contains less than 0.5 percent (or .5%) alcohol by volume." [about zero, right?]
you are hilarious Vi!
This reminds me of the old nerd t-shirt: 2+2=5, for sufficiently large values of 2
Great video! Like many others, I enjoyed that you tackled a "simple" problem while still making it loads of fun.
The question now is how many cans of each soups do we need to have whole servings ?
That's a fun question!
Our old world labels have a comparable amount (100g) attached to the nutritional values.. Not as much fun to puzzle out, but more useful :)
I'm hearing the Level 42 song, Something About Two: How, how can it be That a love carved out of caring Fashioned by fate could suffer so hard From the games played once too often But making mistakes is a part of life's imperfection Born of the years Is it so wrong to be human after all? Drawn into the stream of undefined illusion Those diamond dreams, they can't disguise the truth That there is something "about two", baby, so right I wouldn't be without two, baby tonight
I like this math! It's so practical and revealing. 👩🍳 Poor ramen has been downtrodden for too long! Liberate thine ramen!
Yes! It really revealed my anti-ramen pro-pretty-can biases that show how well marketing works even on super savvy consumers which I am of course.
It may just be that I pay more attention to this sort of thing than most, but I think that that we need more clue like this. It's 'how to adult', but for geeks, so... okay, they're probably figuring it out themselves, but if they hadn't happened on it yet, they're extra OMG about learning it. And mmm eggs.
Eggs!
"Go Soup!" Meanwhile, did you say "someone who teaches beginner Algebra"? https://tiltonsalgebra.com/#
Hey, cool!
This video was a lot of fun to watch! I enjoyed that it contained relatively simple mathematical concepts (i.e. basic algebra, rounding, fractions/percentages, etc.) that I didn't have to think too hard about, but still managed to tackle an interesting and convoluted problem! Thanks for sharing, glad you enjoyed your digging and chose to record this; sorry to hear you didn't manage to meet your goal of >1 video/week, though! :)
Thank you! Convolutizing simple things is my favourite :D
