Update and Thinking Clearly
I've been spending a lot of time trying to catch up with all the little things I didn't do while trying to get the Metachirality videos done as fast as possible, and of course I spent half my "infrastructure catch-up week" making a making-of video instead of catching up on those things, which put me only further behind... so!
This is how vicious cycles begin! For the Emmy Noether video, the research/scripting/storyboard process is simply going to take a long time, but then when I haven't released anything for a bit, I try to quickly do a shorter project, but then I ignore doing other things which I then have to catch up on, before I can get back to the long scripting process, and then of course before long I haven't released anything in a while, and then I'd better do something quick in the mean time...
No more! I'm just going to work on this Emmy Noether video and it's going to take a while. And I want to do it right, and my outline/concept is pretty complex, so I've got to have a clear head. Time and a clear head are two luxuries that are so necessary for deep work and so difficult to come by, but with Patreon now I've got the opportunity!
The time part is just something I've got to decide to take, without worrying that it's taking too long. The clear head part is harder... I've got to, like, empty my inbox and then clean and then meditate and then take a bath or something? I don't know, I'm still learning.
Do you have a favourite way to clear your head and prepare it for clear thinking?

I had to scroll way down here to find a post at my low tier so I could comment on your lens. I scrolled for so long I forgot what I was going to say. Something awesome about dogwoods maybe.
Oh whoops. Check out the community tab, where any patron can make their own post at any level. It's where a lot of the lens discussion is! It's not as easy to find as it should be so here's a link: <a href="https://www.patreon.com/vihart/community?">https://www.patreon.com/vihart/community?</a> I hope you remember what you were going to say about dogwoods!
You are right in that you have to chose, The brilliant thought is to choose alll.
The brilliance of human thought is that it is infinite, as you you described so perfectly. The quantam state of the universe is in the hands of us. Understand that and we are good.
All is only lost at the moment of discontent. Each of us reach a point of discontent. What is important is that we go beyond a moment where we feel it. No more can be said. You are brilliant, all of your followers are I hope brilliant. Just keep forward, No Pressure., I am serious, you can not rush or make faster human thought. It is what it is.
Oh, sand bee. 🐝
I saw a foxtail. I CURSE THEE, FOXTAILS!
Well, excuuUUUUUSE ME, Princess.
I find that vast amounts of extraordinarily strong alcohol helps empty my head. Doesn't help with clear thinking though.
Doot doot dooo, bugs in the interface XD
Exercise works for me too, in my case getting out my mountain bike. Doing something physical that takes all my attention for an hour or so really helps clear out the cobwebs.
Exercise is a good help, especially if it's in nature, because it's complex and beautiful and generally causes the mind to wander which is a catalyst for ideas. But if it necessitates cleaning out your inbox and checking off other boxes first, I find I am super productive whenever I make a list, then every time I am mentally spinning me wheels I go back to the list and can pick any one thing and get it done so that I a) have accomplished something, b) feel productive, and c) stop spinning my wheels/wasting time. But in general I'm a fan of nature walks.
Or canoeing or kayaking. They're easier on the ankles.
Clean.
Mountains and water
I like a two-step process: something that demands attention (e.g., cooking), followed by something that limits stimuli (e.g., long walk). The first step gets me to stop thinking about my previous topic, while the second gets me to start thinking about my next topic.
I like watching science videos on YouTube to destress - CGP Grey, SciShow, MinutePhysics and so on. Kurzgesagt I find really cheers me up because it fires my imagination, usually has an uplifting message and is populated by wonderful cartoon birds.
If I find I've been concentrating too hard on something for too long then my brain is just mush. I watch some Futurama and let myself be stupid for a little while. Making bread or seitan is great for meditation, just knead the dough until your head is clear, bake, and then you have something delicious to eat when you're back to focusing on your work.
I do like bread. I find that cooking takes up the same kind of brainspace as video making though, is usually my problem! I wanna just do the kneading part and skip the combining of ingredients and oven timing thing
Planners! I have a passion planner and it's a beautiful tool. Putting all of your thoughts on a page means less competition for space in your memory. Then you can prioritize certain ideas and activities and go step by step. Passion planners are really cool for a bunch of reasons, but planners in general are good for life
Never heard of passion planners before. Is it the next big thing after bullet journals?
Get outside and out of cities. Preferably a national park, but any public preserved space will do. A good hike through some drop-dead-gorgeous landscapes should do the trick.
#1 mandatory always yes! Cities are the worst for my brain.
I find it helpful to walk every aisle of a grocery store to remind myself that I don't need anything else, I have everything I need already. It gets rid of the nagging feeling that I'm missing something. And if it turns out that I am in fact missing something, voilà.
That's an interesting technique! Never heard of it before, but very philosophical.
Personally, every attempt I make at purposefully clearing my head just ends up turning into a distraction. So instead I just have to start working, and accept that my first ideas/results are not likely to be viable and will have to be reworked later in the session, once my brain is ready for 'deep work' or whatever you want to call it. Basically, "just do it". And maybe use a totally different internet browser from whatever else you were doing. ("Just doing it" works best for me when I'm a little hungry, i.e. way after mealtime, but your mileage may vary, and definitely don't starve yourself! haha)
That's why I like to eat a million meals a day, especially when working hard. If a meal is too big I get the food tireds, but if I get to hungry I cease to function!
They have know Idea why you have entered their space and will treat you as an alien
black hole have seen this happen before and are prepared for people traversing time and space or not. I hope it is the latter.
Disregard my "Latter" comment.
So two options: 1. People on the other side of the
The truth is we do not know what would happen if we entered a Black Hole. I think this as follows: 1. We would not physically experience it as is known. 2. The "spaghettification" would happen. 3. By conservation of energy we would be "recombined" in to the exact matter that we were. 4. We would be reconstructed into whatever we were before we entered. 5. We would then be left in space floating and hoping that some how people on the the other side new about Space travelers?
ok
Ok, Sorry, The conclusion is the deeper in the sea you go, you find a Black hole. A black hole is at the center of all of our existence. We all are attracted to that end. We are all attracted to our own end and who will be with us and how and when will it happen. So maybe we are not so different than we think. What keeps us alive is that we know about it and keep a watch on it and our own lives.
You will have to wait for the conclusion.
String theory points at this in that all things are waves of matter. How better an illustration to compare thermocline movement of water at deep sea observation.
Floating is the mathematical premise of some force operating on a body the is unseen but understood, i.e. gravity.
We can not see how things float at deep water. It is the same with Dark Matter.
Think of dark matter as like the difference between water at different and extreme depths. If Water is gravity. Then if Deeper Water is Darker Gravity.
That quanta of energy does not exist in any matter or other. You just created dark matter.
Find a space where everything and nothing are equal. Where Tau = infinity. An irrational space. If you Can except the two concepts existing together, that is a quanta of energy you just created.
Hey Nonny Nonny. "Just quoting Shakespeare or whoever, I guess he is even in question? Find the places you like to be. Be There. Find the people you like to be with. For me it is Non. Hey Nonny Nonny.
also disconnect from social media and replace with trees
real birds usually have deeper things to say than twitter anyway!
walking in nature is the best meditation
I don't know any way of clearing the head, and when it comes to creative stuff (poems in my case) I find there's a sort of two phase process: 1) have the idea, jot it down, make notes, do research -- however, importantly, only little of the creation can happen in this phase: bits get written down, moved around, but nothing yet feels like it is working... 2) at some point that reaches a critical mass, or nucleation, or other metaphor of your choice, at which point writing often proceeds quite quickly (In some cases there's then the "oh this doesn't work, let's rewrite" phase :-)) So possibly the needing to clear your head is similar to waiting for nucleation...?
"nucleation" is a good metaphor! My process definitely involves holding a pile of concept, outline, research, details, notes, etc all in my head at once until it gels into something that can be translated out. Nucleation can't happen unless everything is sitting in there all at once and easily accessible, which is increasingly difficult with the complexity of the project!
hey, I'm not sure if (or actually how much) mathematics Your Emmy Noether script contains, but giving her credit for the algebaization of topology is something many mathematicians miss!
have a look e.g. here: <a href="http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.499.2397&rep=rep1&type=pdf" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.499.2397&rep=rep1&type=pdf</a>
It sounds like you already have a general idea of the project outline, but of course there will be many decisions to make between now and the final cut. When Isaac Asimov wanted inspiration, he'd go to the movies. (I was amazed to read that; he was so prolific that you'd think he wrote all day every day.) As for clearing your head, my number one technique is to write all ideas, to-do tasks, and thoughts down on paper index cards. In other words, get those ideas out of your head so you don't have to think about them for now. Index cards are easy to organize, throw away, arrange into patterns on a table, and edit (with a pen or pencil). I've never been able to find something digital that works as well.
Works for me as long as keep it up: Don't eat past dinnertime; exercise in early evening so as to fall asleep at a decent (before midnight) hour; quick exercise in morning, eat low-carb breakfast. Also sublingual B-12 caplets.
By exercise I mean cardio - walking or biking alternate days.
First, I'm really excited for an Emma Noether video! I've heard just a little about her work and it sounds really interesting, so I'd love to understand it better. So, please take your time and do a great job! Re thinking, my favorite way to prepare for clear thinking, and to actually do clear thinking, is to write out my thoughts as I'm thinking them, in full sentences. This is a technique called “thinking on paper”, and I learned from a woman named Jean Moroney. I've been doing it on a daily basis for almost twenty years, and it changed my life. Hope that helps, and best of luck!
Muse school has served you well, even without a telepathy program. I think you’re saying that your desire for a clear head is not for having the ideas, but rather for manifesting them. And the metaphor I’m seeing now is one of a (mental) juggler — especially if one of the objects being tossed around is much heavier and clunkier than the others. Here, developing the skill (via practice and many failures) is probably more valuable than developing a clarity that enhances the skill. I wish it could be easier.
Taking walks! Though sometimes I can get distracted by things I see on my walks or end up out longer than I mean to be. But definitely taking just me walks is great. I lived with a roommate with a dog last year and the year before and with-a-dog walks are so different and way more distracting. I especially like to walk near some sort of body of water when I'm walking by myself.
Yeah, I'm learning that thing about with-a-dog walks. I've taken exactly 1 without-a-dog walk this year =\
Wow. So easy to project here. I relate to what both Mike and Zach have said — though I think Mike’s approach is far more sustainable over the long term. For me it’s a matter of calming the my dread that it might never come again, and then preparing to welcome her when/if she arrives. (Yes, I take muse-like things as female.). For me this cannot be a matter of control or even cookbook methodology; muses hate that sh*t and I frankly don’t blame them. It’s much more a matter of rolling with whatever I’ve been blessed with at any given instant. On some, increasingly rare, occasions it might be Mensa-level clairity. (Great Fun!). Most of the time, it’s the usual day-to-day mental/emotional give and take. (But this too can be fun.). As near as I can tell, you’ve been blessed with an outrageously talented muse who likes to stop by from time to time. Excellent! You even chosen to share her works with the general world — including me! Wonderful! I therefore hope (primarily for your sake; secondarily for mine and others) that she continues to visits often. Now to directly answer your actual question: To clear my head I try to not actively try to clear my head. For me, trying would be like spanking the surface of a pond with a large flat board in an effort mash down the waves. I hope all this helps or at the very least entertains / encourages. Peace.
Hehehe I like your wave-mashing metaphor. I don't think I have a lack of muse visits, I think I probably am the muse. But I don't have magic muse powers that let me whisper straight into people's brains so I have to figure out how to do it through video and they didn't teach me how to do that at muse school! Magic muse telepathy would make things so much easier but now I gotta use, like, words and stuff.
You can't control when inspiration is going to strike, but you can prepare yourself and be ready for it. Take care of as much of your todo list as you can while you're sitting around with writer's block, and make a "disable all distractions" checklist that you can follow quickly and without a lot of thinking, like an aircraft pilot in an emergency. Or maybe an expectant mother prepping a go bag is a happier analogy.
Yep. I don't get writer's block, but I frequently have the problem of my metaphorical go bag losing vital components so I can't effectively run away with the ideas I have.
I listen to Mozart. It sort of provides a thread for my mind to follow, without actually taking my attention. Good luck!
Maybe I should try more Mozart. The composers I usually like to listen to are attention hogs.
Sleep.
Oh man, so true. If I don't get 10 hours a night I rapidly deteriorate.
I like to go sailing
Never been sailing, but wind and water do sound very head-clearing.
HIke! Go swimming!
I do like hikes!
Go for a walk in a nearby park. You can’t go wrong.
Y'know, with the dogget I've gotten in the habit of never "wasting" a walk just on myself. But I should probably get back into the habit of taking walks that don't involve focusing all my attention on dog management!
