New Video: The Smoothest Ride

Finally, over a year after I first drafted the script, I've finished part 3 in the series on calculus and bad driving!

This was not an easy one, in terms of figuring out how to represent all the slopes and things going on at the same time while telling a story and balancing all the things going on, but the result is much better than my previous drafts, lemme tell you.

Two videos released in one month! Going from a decent draft script to a finished video is much faster than going from an idea to a draft script. And being third in a series helps.  Here's the previous two:

The Calculus of Bad Driving: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pI62ANEGK6Q

The Case for Hovercars: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zQsYJi5pFE

What's next? Well, I'd like to put some time into Project Butterfly, though I expect that'll be ongoing for months. And I have more ideas in the calculus series I'm going to spend some time fleshing out to see what sticks, and also I'd like to do a holiday themed math improv in December...

The very next thing on my list, though, is to go collect a pile of Amazon Wish List packages tomorrow! And then set up my new equipment and be warm with my new warms and art with my new arts and Dogget gets to be warm too!

I'm actually quite amazed how many people hopped on board, not just for things directly related to video production but also random things I need. Now I've got enough in the budget to buy my truck some badly-needed new tires before winter starts in earnest... more slope points for my deceleration :D

One time, my aunt was trying to open something by pulling on it quite hard. When that didn't work, my father went over and opened it right up with barely any effort. My aunt wanted to know why she hadn't been able to do it, to which my grandmother replied, "It takes a jerk to do it." My father claims she meant the third derivative of position.

The first thing that came to mind was "Physics" and not calculus, as I am doing Master's in Physics. How cool is this! and you have not used equations!! Keep them coming .I like to imagine if you were into physics , as much as you are into Maths, how would you doodle or maybe do videos on 'backyard physics' :)

Speaking of math and tailgating, math will prove that enough tailgating can fix traffic jams. Traffic jams happen when the number of cars on a road is greater than the flow capacity. The flow capacity is equal to the average speed of the cars divided by the average spacing of the cars (miles/hour / miles/car = cars/hour), so if you reduce the distance between cars (tailgate) the flow increases, traffic congestion decreases, and math solves all the problems.

Ha! My old man complained I was not a smooth stick shifter because he got thrown forward when I hit the clutch, momentarily losing the accelerative force (which was substantial because I was pedal-to-the-metal driver). The factor you did not mention is that during acceleration we apply a forward force to keep our heads from being thrown back, and that force is still in play when I hit the clutch. I was largely unaffected because I knew the moment I was hitting the clutch, but he got a jerk from the third derivative going unexpectedly to zero. I tried to explain to Pops that there was no way for me to shift without him doing a convincing imitation of me hitting the brakes, but I needed this video!

Yay, more Vi Hart videos!

Just had a thought, more for some enterprising person here than necessarily for Vi: Has anyone considered curating a set of Khan Academy math videos together with Vi Hart videos into a loose curriculum? Seems like it would be an amazing combo.

I love your videos! Unsolicited advice coming up... Please don't burn yourself out. If you're not familiar with it and not thinking about how to recognise that setting in, you can probably find folk to discuss their experiences. I've only seen one youtuber talk about it - Draw with Jezza. I'd offer, but I'm just some random bloke on the internet that you don't know. End of unsolicited advice.

Been there done that! Trying to be more sustainable this time around.

This convinced me that self-driving cars need to happen asap! PS: I am not very fond of driving.

I agree!

a new branch of math: auto-calculytics

I am so glad to see that the Patreon adventure is looking good, and so happy to see you back on YouTube! Since you are talking about calculus, it would be so cool to do some collaboration with 3blue1brown. I am sure you could work out something pretty interesting :) Unfortunately, his series on calculus is already done though :(

Yes! Grant is a pretty cool person, maybe someday...

I like the random nomenclature of things. For example, the first integral with respect to time of position is called absement, and a guy named Steve Mann invented a musical instrument called a hydraulophone that responds to absement! Yay, nomenclatures!

V
Vi Hart · November 14, 2017

Yes! I may get to absement in the video series eventually, not sure though. I have pictures somewhere of me and Steve playing hydraulophone together...
