New Video: Supersmarties
I love autumn, I love Halloween, and I love candy.
Not that I like eating it---no smarties were consumed in the making of this video. But in concept, candy still holds the magic of childhood.
Candy is fun, and playful, and sometimes aesthetically pleasing to the eyes and the hands.
Just like math!
Anyway, after banging my head against a different project that wasn't coming together, I decided to just sit down and have some fun with a bag of Smarties. I hope you enjoy.
Happy Halloween to you all! Thanks for sticking around!

what happened to the videos?
Great stuff! Look, this is a strange question, but do you ever do "mathemusical consulting?" Long story short, I'm involved in this microtonal scale project right now, and it's turned into this interesting higher dimensional geometry thing, and I've been banging my head at a wall with this thing for the last few weeks and you'd probably see right away how to do it. Very interested if so
sharpie of the month club twisty smartie icosahedron holders, UNTIE!
I always suspected Frankenstein was a verb!
Yes it is! The noun form is actually "Frankensteined monster."
You never fail to put a smile on my face. Thanks!
Great video. I thought the first iteration was perfect as it was but kudos on your commitment to Super Smarty Shortening Surgery.
In Canada these candies are known as 'Rockets'. In Canada 'smarties' are a small chocolate covered in various coloured hard coated candies. Some trademark dispute from 1937. I'd suspect most of the world knows the 'nestle' smarties as what we know in Canada.
That's what I was expecting living in Australia too.
I was instantly reminded of this recent Matt Parker / Adam Savage collab, where they struggled mightily to build a Borromean box out of giant paper clips: https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=E8TlwodjNTI
Zachary Abel's sculptures are so cool! I've gotten to see some in person, the pictures don't do them justice.
I'm curious about the "candy doesn't bring joy anymore" observations? Like, is it: * medical stuff (I'm pre-diabetic so I get this, gf has med interaction changes to her diet plus ozempic so there's actually lots of fascinating ways med stuff can change what's fun to eat 😅) * choose to abstain because more mature about diet being healthy * no fun anymore because the market saturated (candy used to be expensive now it's cheap and everywhere) * subjectively candy actually used to taste good and now it tastes bad, they probably cheap out way too much on the ingredients these days * Some fascinating new way that the lego bricks of food and emotion snap together?
I've learned by now that "I genuinely dislike eating near-pure sugar" is so far down the list of reasons people might think I refuse a piece of candy or birthday cake or whatever, that it does not appear. But I simply don't like it. I liked candy as much as any kid when I was a kid, but lost my sweet tooth at some point in my teens, and it's not like it's so healthy that I would go out of my way to eat it if I don't want it. I don't know how literal the idea of sugar addiction is, but at least for me it's been true that the more I don't eat pure sugar, the more intolerably gross it tastes. Fun fact: in my candy buttons video I only pretended to eat the candy buttons, I spit every single one out off camera!
Its so neat how a pentagon polylink sits and creates a pentagon at the bottom. Also notice
Yes! The whole thing has similar symmetry to a dodecahedron. Each of the 6 pentagons is on an axis of 5-fold rotational symmetry, and it creates some nice apparent pentagons!
Your hands looked happy 🤲
OMG I love thought trail off end
Ooh I’m leaving a comment!
I admire your commitment to S alliteration
Sthanksss!

It's always a good time when we get an unexpected Vi Vid!
