Australia Day (piracy parody)

This is an issue that is very close to my heart; one that we've covered before in one of our Rap News episodes: Australia Day - or as Aborginal people call it: Invasion Day.

(Friends in America/Europe: if you support Native American or Palestinian rights - then just substitute Australia Day for Columbus Day, or the Nakba, respectively).

It's not one for the faint hearted, I admit. But I feel this video captures the essence of what's so messed up about Australia Day (and Columbus Day and Yom ha'atzmaut): it celebrates another peoples' tragedy: their Holocaust, their Catastrophe. And there's no fluffy, light-hearted of conveying that.

As you can see I decided to experiment with something different this time. Rather than making an Honest Govt Ad, I went down the parody path:

Remember the old classic anti piracy video that used to play at the start of all rented DVDs? If you're were born after the mid-90s, or you don't live in Australia or the UK, you might now know it. So here's the original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmZm8vNHBSU

I hope you like my take on it!

IN OTHER NEWS:

I've started working on a new Rap News episode. I've booked in Mantra and Class A for early February so, provided things go according to plan, I hope that the wait for a new Rap News instalment is almost over.

There's no shortage of topics to cover! But if you would like to make some suggestions below, I'd welcome them.

Making a Rap News episode is a massive operation, so I am grateful for your patience. Most of all I am grateful for all the support you have given for all my other videos since the last Rap News episode. It is awesome that I can have other outlets for my creativity and ideas - and I'm thankful that you've given me that freedom.

<3 Giordano

PS: This is the first time i've managed to produce two videos in a month - the quota I've been aiming for. (It's a bid deal for me!) Remember: you can cap your pledge to a certain amount per month so even if I were to make 20 videos in a month (as if), you won't go over your set limit. :)

PPS: Here's the Youtube URL for those who prefer to view the video on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UytdM-x3cv4

Dunno if you saw it a couple years ago in the UK, but the IT crowd made a funny parody on this as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeFA0QGc_Vk

Had not seen that, thanks for the headsup Marco!

Hi Giordano, I would love to see a rap news about the cashless society. Seems that biometrics and NFC chips are slowly replacing our fiat currency which has replaced our gold back currencies. Look at India as a guinea pig for how a cashless society can be introduced. Would be interesting to see your take on the whole shebang. eg. https://singularityhub.com/2017/01/26/india-is-building-the-infrastructure-for-a-truly-digital-economy/

Hi Ben. Thank you for making a suggestion :) That's a really interesting issue and one that I've been meaning to cover for a while. A couple years back we even drafted a whole episode of Rap News about Bitcoin - feat a cameo by Satoshi (who decided to reveal himself to the world via Rap News). But then some dude by the name of Edward Snowden made headlines and we had to put it on the shelf. Where it still sits. Thanks for the reminder :)

Here is a direct link for who has tracking protection that blocks Facebook's spying all over the Internet https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UytdM-x3cv4

Thanks Andrei - I'll add the link to the body of the post too.

Why do you choose Facebook video over YouTube? I don’t really like providing Facebook with data, less so than Google. My Privacy Badger addon (created by the EFF) blocks connect.facebook.net which seems to to use tracking cookies as determined by it. Video playback works fine allowing the domains JS but continuing to block cookies on it, but I am still curious what made you switch away from YouTube to Facebook. Is it the bigger viewing audience? To prevent reuploads/freebooting?

Hi Jan, sorry about that: I use Privacy Badger too. To answer your question: Patreon only allows me to post one link and I've been opting for the Facebook url because Juice Media videos are getting vastly more views there than Youtube* I guess I want to show Patrons here that the videos you are helping to fund are making a big impact and attracting a large audience. I could post the Youtube url instead but it might give the impression the response is not as big. But from now I will make sure to also include the Youtube link in the text. * For example, the Dakota Access Pipeline HGA had 10M views on FB but only 57k on Youtube. Centrelink: 2.2M views on FB and 100k on YT. And this latest one has 1.3M views on FB and 78k on YT

Really liked the new video. Great job! As for suggestions; in one of your up coming videos, you can talk about how the liberal media celebrated this women's march, and then when everybody forgot about DAPL; boom Trump signed the order to continue. The point is that the media, just like on the campaigns, focused on sex, tweets, respect for women and so forth; and avoided all the big issues which actually affect the economy or global warming. This was a continuation.

Glad you liked it Gidon. And thanks for the suggestion. You make a very good point there. I really hope to say something about DAPL

I think it's mildly disappointing how the past few videos have been getting heavy dislikes from people. It seems that 2016 has polarised a lot of people politically, and they can't put that aside for anything anymore. Either way, this was a good ad, and I loved the callback to the old piracy ad it was based on. Keep up the great work!

Actually the last two videos I made (Centrelink and Carmichael Coal Mine) both had a really strongly positive response. But when the topic of the videos touches on Race (such as this one and the Trump video I made in November) then, yes, as you say, very polarised. And very intollerant. 2016 was definitely a turning point. But I think it might go back farther; I remember noticing this in late 2014... It's an ominous sign tbh :-/ I'm really glad you liked this one, though. Thanks for your encouragement CS1 :)
