Honest Government Ad | Electric Vehicles

Dear Patrons

Here's the latest Honest Government Ad which you helped to produce.

This one's about our Federal Government’s “policy” on EVs - aka the "Future Fuels Strategy” - aka "FFS". (And yes, that's what they really called it… They're doing our work for us now)

I also had to include a section for the Victorian State Government (which I think normally does a lot of good things) given their decision to introduce a tax on EVs.

Victoria's Parliament will be voting on the EV tax in early May so if you want to let them know how you feel about it, please add your name to this letter which will be hand delivered to crossbench MPs ahead of the vote.

And to be clear, I'm not against taxes. Tax is the price we pay for living in a civilised society. But it's also important not to be ideologically "rusted on" to this position so that we can't call out taxes that are poorly targeted and timed - and this one is both.

On a side note: this is the first time we've filmed a significant part of an HGA outdoors - and we had heaps of fun doing it! (I've attached a little snippet so you can see how we did it).

We had to get some help with the camera to do this - something we can afford thanks to you. So hopefully this is something we'll be able to do more of in future HGAs.

There was so much more to say on this topic that I couldn’t fit in the video. But that’s exactly where the Juice Media Podcast comes in handy as a companion to the video, allowing us to go into more detail. And I'm stoked to have as my guest Ketan Joshi - one of my favourite climate/science/energy communicators. So stay tuned for the podcast next week.

Oh and Ellen is editing the PG version right now; you'll see it on our Teachers page in the next hour or so.

As always, a huge thank you to all of you - our extended Patreon family - for coming together to support our work. Next month will be the 5th anniversary of the Honest Government Ads series - can you believe it? We couldn't have built this powerful tool for slaying shitfuckery without you.

Love and gratitude

Giordano & team

LJC. You must be from the US. Here in Australia our government abandoned the motor vehicle industry which subsequently collapsed) and then opened up spending billions of dollars on weapons and 'defence' products to stimulate jobs- go figure). good work with your friends and spreading the message. Respect

I work in the auto-industry and we are all worried about what is being done to (avoid) EVs in this country. So I shared this video with all of my (sadly) right-wing colleagues, who loved it. I consider this my sneaky way of subtly pushing a bit of truth into their brains in the hope that they snap out of it just a little bit.

The shout out to "get on the beers" made my day- and that's saying something considering I saw a quoll this morning! Brilliant stuff, loved the outdoor filming

That's quite an achievement, quolls are amazing :)

Hi Laurent. The maths changes dramatically if you believe that companies are successful in creating self-driving vehicles, and that services arise to shared those vehicles across multiple users (aka Telsa's robot-taxis). I personally am sure that will happen - then the 17% can drop to just about nothing. Watch this space!

Self driving vehicles, they do not reduce the number of miles traveled, they just change the driver so that is totally irrelevant to the energy landscape. And actually, a self driving car would travel more, in order to meet its next passenger in between "productive" drives.

L
Laurent Giroud · April 27, 2021

@Giordano, even with improvements in batteries, nothing will change the fact that when driving a car 90% of the energy we use is wasted transporting 1.5 ton of steel. Cars are inherently inefficient regardless of the energy source. Assuming that Australia switches entirely its car fleet to electric and powers it using solar panels. This will still mean that 90% of those panels will be used not to carry the human but to carry one unnecessary ton of steel. Replacing those cars with an ebike or minimalistic car (200kg max) would reduce the number of solar panels by at least a factor of 8. And this is totally independent of battery technology, just pure physics. I recommend you look into the notion of "carbon budget". Essentially this is the total amount of CO2 that we are allowed to emit if we want to restrict ourselves under 2C of warming. If we go over this carbon budget, we will get more than 2C. If we are serious about staying under 2C, then once we reach that carbon budget we must entirely cease emitting CO2 (and that's preferably before 2050). After that, we are not allowed any additional emissions. If you divide that budget by the number of humans on earth, this gives the carbon budget per person until 2050 and at today's rates this does not give us much of a margin. Total budget is approximately 800 G tons of carbon so per capita that is 800/7.9 =101 tons of carbon. For comparison, manufacturing a Tesla Model S emits 17.5 tons of carbon dioxide, so by buying an EV, one blows 17.5/101 = 17% of our remaining carbon budget. (This would be approximately the same for a ICE car.) And this is not counting emissions when driving (due to how electricity is generated, losses in batteries, etc.). So, needless to say that an expense which removes 17% of one's budget for the next 29 years is not a good idea.

I love the video, great work as usual. Putting a tax on EVs is pretty counter productive as things go but I would like to point out that EVs are definitely not a longterm viable solution to climate change and on quite a few aspects: 1 - Construction and use. As things go, building an EV requires more CO2 emissions than an equivalent Internal Combustion Engine car (ICE). Emissions are lower during use but in countries where electricity is produced from fossil fuel, the whole energy chain is still 100% fossil fuel based even if the entire car fleet of the country switched to EVs. 2- General energy efficiency = that of a car = disastrous No matter how we slice and dice it, driving a car consists in moving a 1.5 metric ton of steel in order to carry a 50-200kg bag of water/meat/bones. In pure energy terms it is a horribly wasteful system: 200/1500 = 13% efficiency as 87% of the energy is wasted transporting steel instead of the human. So, all in all, EVs are at best a transition mechanism but we simply cannot afford to waste 87% of our energy if we want to seriously tackle climate change. The energy envelope afforded by renewables is way too small and too slow growing (even with the most optimistic of hypotheses) to allow us to replace the existing car fleet with EVs. We must downsize cars to human-sized vehicles like ebikes instead and wherever possible incentivize public transportation for long distance journeys. So, yes taxing EVs is silly, but it may not be as silly as thinking EVs actually help us fighting climate change. Here is a fantastic (even if depressing) video about how/if technology can save us from Climate Change by the top French expert on climate change adaptation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s254IPHXgVA I highly recommend everyone to watch it to know what we can expect and not expect from technological improvements in the fight against warming.

Hahahahahahaha! They really do seem to be doing your work for you--but then you just keep getting better at doing your work! As a Yank watching this, I feel just a tiny bit better about our own government: "Well--at least we're not so completely hopeless as their guys." Cheers and thank you, and...my sympathies.

Gooooaaallll! I've shared this one all over the place. The icing on the government's caca is that they'd actually use FFS for their ridiculous program. Methinks Ellen looks truly stunning in the car I drive. She'll covet one now!

Again I get the happys and the sads at the same time with satire that cuts just too deep... I wish we didn't need it! Thanks guys :) Any other nerds out there notice how the Tesla's headlights refresh rate is mismatched to that of the camera, in the behind the scenes video? :D Jealous you got to play with one. Tesla should give you one just for making this HGA!

t
thejuicemedia · April 26, 2021

Yeah they're pretty amazing! It was cool to get a chance to drive it around a bit - its a totally different driving experience

This is better th(a)n great! Excellent messaging. It's unbelievable: the list of short sighted policies is never ending... it's clear the heavy metals are affecting their brains. I still can't get over the $440M given to their coal mining mates in 2018 to look at Gt Barrier Reef damage and tell us it's all good as they can't prove coal did it... but hey, $56M to the marine dept who do have a track record of research on protecting the reef. Just like they re-announced $285M of funding for renewable energy research last week which they also announced in Sept 2020 (a real term reduction) blocking support to wind and solar while promising $1Bn for gas and carbon capture.... which is like burning your house down to see if you can condense enough water out of the atmosphere to put the fire out. Lest we forget how corrupt these puppets are - looking after their mates - so long as your mate is a billionaire coal or right wing media exec, who really must hate Australia to poison it so.
