Honest Government Ad | Preferential Voting
Dear Patrons, here is the latest Honest Government Ad you’ve made possible.
Last week, when I posted the Election season-finale, I said I’d try my best to fit one more HGA in before the election. Sure enough, I got straight to work and here we are with the goods!
Actually, I've been researching and working on the script for this HGA for the past month or so. Because I REALLY wanted to cover this topic. I’ve seen SO many people posting comments to the effect of: “What do we do? Who do we vote for?” Clearly, we did a decent job of capturing this Government’s shitfuckery. But maybe I’ve not done enough in terms of providing solutions.
This was also one of the topics you requested. Even our actor Zoë asked if we could make an HGA about preferential voting. So yeah - we just had to do it.
To be clear: it's not my place to promote any specific candidate or party. That’s why I wrote this video without any references to specific candidates or parties. And my criteria for defining what constitutes a “Not Shit” candidate is in the context of the climate emergency we face, thus: one with a serious climate policy (ideally 100% emission reduction by 2030, which is doable) and who receives ZERO donations from fossil fuel lobbies.
I respect my audience enough to trust that folks will do their research and work out which candidate in your seat fits that description. There are plenty of them.
So, if you're like me and believe we need to cut the two-party bullshit on climate mediocrity, which sees us swinging from one side to the other whilst our children’s future vanishes before our eyes, then now's the time to learn how preferential voting works. Because a strong crossbench of MPs who stand for strong climate action is the only thing that will hold to account whichever major-party representative of the fossil fuel industry ends up forming Government.
Yes… some people will try to say this video was made by the Greens, funded by the Greens, or some other bullshit. What can I say? The beauty of all this, is that because we are funded by you - our Patrons - this is my own independent voice. I might be wrong about something - but at least I speak my own mind, and not that of any group, organisation and certainly no political party.
I am also a father, I love my son Luca and I want to fight for his future – so that one day when he asks, I can tell him I really tried my best. Surely that is motivation enough to make this video.
Geez. Sorry for this long post!
To wrap up - this concludes our election series of HGAs. Thanks to you, we produced 6 videos in the space of 3 months, covering key election issues – especially climate and the economy. And when we include the previous 32 HGAs which you helped us make with your patronage, I think it’s safe to say we’ve done a buttload of work to ensure millions of Australian voters are aware of just how shit this Government has been.
So bring on Election day, I say!
Thank you for your amazing support everyone. I’ll catch you soon, (after a short break to recover from the past month of hard work), with our next video!

Oh for gods sake Giordano! I spend thirty minutes in impassioned explanation of this topic with my partner...nothing. Two and a half minutes from you guys and the penny has finally dropped for him! Next time, it's straight to the Juice :-)
Haha awesome ;-)
Oh, and I will be proudly wearing my newly acquired Jucie merch down to the polling booth on Saturday (Sadly in the blue ribbon seat of Curtin) where a swing is as good as a win :)
Hehe that's awesome to know - good luck in Curtin!
Giordano and team - exceptional work, both this and the HGAs during the (endless) run up to the election. Have a break and sit back with a tub of popcorn on Saturday night... for Eurovision, not that 'other' show, of course :)
Haha thanks Peter. Sadly Eurovision is being hosted by Israel so I won't be tuning in for it, But otherwise yeah, we'll be taking it easy on Saturday!
Since the first thing it did was kick out a republican, the current administration on the federal level is unlikely to encourage any change in that direction. But I can hope.
Actually, in the state of Maine in the US where I live, we have started the preferential voting. We call it rank choice, but it got a shit light candidate to win instead of a shit candidate who was the incumbent. Yay!
Oh wow! I am so glad to hear this! There is hope then that the system might be adopted at the federal level?
Well done Giordano. I've been talking to people who are fairly well engaged and yet still had no idea that people like Fr Bower has launched "Independents for Climate Action Now" bid for the upper house in this election. And as much as I'm hoping the ALP gets into Government...I also know they need the another interests to monitor them to make certain they do the right thing. I'm pretty fired up by the Greenpeace video researched by Michael West on the enormous corruptive influence the Coal Magnates have on Government and how Australia has been sold out again and again. Thanks for all you do to keep us informed and active.
You're welcome, Alpheus! Thank you (and all our Patrons) for making it possible to do this!
