Katy Reads Rebecca: Chapters 15-18
Well... things have officially gone off the rails.
This week we're covering Chapters 15–18, where our unnamed narrator discovers that marrying a handsome widower with a haunted mansion might not have been the fairytale she was hoping for.
We meet Maxim's grandmother (which goes... spectacularly badly), prepare for Manderley's legendary costume ball, and witness one of the most excruciatingly awkward scenes in literary history. Then, because apparently emotional devastation wasn't enough, Mrs. Danvers decides to crank the psychological horror up to eleven.
We talk about why this section changes the entire tone of the novel, whether Maxim deserves to be launched directly into the sea, and why Frank Crawley continues to be the only emotionally functional person in this entire house.
As always, spoilers for Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier.
Cheers, bitches.
