Am I too late to the party? I’d love to hear about some Indegenous queens of the US, Canada and Alaska! Queen Alliquippa of the Seneca. Nation would be a cool one to start with 🥰
- Brunhilda & Fredegund - Edith of Wessex - Herleva of Falaise - The Sons of William the Conqueror & Matilda of Flanders - Anne of York, Duchess of Exeter - The Pazzi Conspiracy, 1478 - The Kotze Scandal, 1891
Another idea for some other time: The women in Lord Byron’s life! 1/ Anne Isabella Noel Byron (Lady Byron): Annabella was an education reformist and abolitionist who couldn’t stand her husband, Lord Byron. She raised their daughter to be a brilliant mathematician, steering clear of anything literary. Byron’s erratic behavior and claims of madness led her to leave him, and she somehow managed to get custody of their daughter at a time when children usually stayed with their father or the father’s extended family. Byron left England for good a month after their daughter was born. She was completely convinced that Byron has fathered a daughter with his own half-sister. 2/ Ada Lovelace, neé Byron: Ada, Byron’s only legitimate daughter, grew up to be a math whiz and ended up writing s lot of the early theory behind computer science. She wrote about Charles Babbage’s “Analytical Engine” (the first imagining of a “computer”) sad was the first to figure out that, if built, a computer could theoretically do more than just math. She is known as the first-ever programmer. Despite her mom’s best efforts, Ada was fascinated by Byron and named her sons after him. She even wanted to be buried next to him. 3/ Augusta Maria Leigh: Augusta, Byron’s half-sister, likely had an affair with him, resulting in a daughter, Elizabeth Medora Leigh. They didn’t grow up together and seemed to genuinely fall in love. This scandal, along with others, made Byron leave his wife and England for good. 4/ Elizabeth Medora Leigh: Almost certainly the daughter of Byron and his half-sister Augusta, Elizabeth Medora Leigh had a pretty scandalous life. She later ran off with her sister’s husband, adding even more drama to an already messy family situation. 5/ Claire Clairmont: Claire, Mary Shelley’s stepsister, had an affair with Byron, resulting in their daughter, Allegra Byron. Claire was head over heels for Byron, but he quickly got bored of her. She followed him to Switzerland, convincing Mary and Percy Shelley to tag along. It was during this weird holiday that Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein. After Allegra was born, Claire handed her over to Byron, hoping he’d give her a better life, but he placed Allegra in a convent where she died young. Claire spent the rest of her life blaming Byron for Allegra’s death. She later worked as a governess in Russia and moved around Europe before settling in Florence, where she died at 80 years old. 6/ Allegra Byron: Allegra, the daughter of Byron and Claire Clairmont, was taken by Byron and placed in a convent in Italy. She died when she was only five years old and both of her parents were heartbroken by the news and never completely recovered. Byron wrote some pretty poems about her and her death, but the whole thing makes me want to shake him for abandoning her in a convent in the first place.
Okay hear me out, can we get a big deep dive and analysis of some of your favorite musicals like Jesus Christ Superstar and The Book of Mormon? I’d love the historical context and plot analysis of whatever musical or play you’re feeling.

More modern but Katharine Hepburn. The movie industry is a bag of dicks and she somehow survived. There's also a crazy story about her riding out the 1938 hurricane in CT that's worth checking out.

I have so many ideas. I’ll start by shamefully plugging an extremely distant relation that seriously really needs her own biopic though! (HBO, I even have a title for you “Scandal, Speed, and Sapphic Verses: The Daring Life of Baroness Hélène van Zuylen van Nijevelt van de Haar née de Rothschild”) Hélène’s life is a fascinating blend of high society scandal, daring exploits, and unapologetic authenticity. Perfect for Queens Podcast! 1) Noble/Bougie Heritage: Born into the prominent Rothschild banking family in 1863. 2) Defiant Marriage: Disinherited by her mother for marrying Catholic Baron Etienne van Zuylen, defying societal and familial expectations. 3) Motoring Pioneer: - First woman to compete in an international motor race in 1898 (Paris–Amsterdam–Paris Trail). - Member of the Automobile Club of France, breaking gender barriers in a male-dominated field. 4) Literary Contributions: Co-authored stories and poems with her lesbian partner Renée Vivien under the pseudonym Paule Riversdale. 5) Social Defiance: Lived openly in a same-sex relationship, challenging the conservative norms of her time. 7) Nazis—yes, the story even has Nazis. Didn’t I mention her life has it ALL?
