[BONUS] Episode Q - The Snowman (2017)

This week on Be Gay Solve Crimes, we give you all the clues.

Well, maybe not all of them. Some of the clues. A few clues. We're giving you a smattering of clues. Okay, final offer, we'll give you two thirds of the clues for two thirds of the hosts. That's right, it's the Lucy and Nova show this week, and we're tackling the 2017 film production catastrophe that was The Snowman.

Join us as we scientifically find the sweet spot for the amount of mould needed to make you a good detective but not a transphobe, David Attenborough tells us how to pick up a penguin, and we take inspiration from the editors of The Snowman to realise we left 15% of the plot of last week's episode on the cutting room floor.

Be Gay Solve Crimes are on Bluesky, where you can also find each of the team: November Kelly, Mia Mulder, and your local librarian Lucy, who writes all the music for the show.

Mia will be back next week for our first Halloween Special as we get extra spooky with it for Kenneth Branagh's Poirot! 🎃👻💀

I always mix this movie up with Jack Frost

May I recommend the anime Apothecary Diaries? It's about an apothecary in ancient (not) China who solves poison related mysteries in the palace where the emperors concubines live. I think the first mystery is solved in episode 2 so it would only be like an hour of anime to watch if you guys ever want to do something short and easy

Adding a few tidbits: with the Ø on Jo Nesbø, the Lancastrian genuinely helps, accidental win there. Also at the end "Malört" with an umlaut could be any European language, but funnily enough, it's from Chicago. A strange herbal liqueur that tastes like vomit to some folks (it's honestly not nearly that bad).

29:25 "Did they kill God?" Close, they killed Jesus (hey Zeus) 38:49 "How does this guy who loves vigilante revenge make movie about how that is a self destructive urge?" It's the fascist death drive. They want to be martyrs.

..it's kinda weird that the US keeps trying to make this Scandy-slop work (ie, a crime-movie made for tv, that's self-contained, but has some minor character arcs). The main reason it doesn't really work, is that the US audience for this is already captured by the phenomenon that preceded Scandy-slop (and which Scandy-slop came about as a reaction to), namely televised series like Law and Order and later roughly three-million CSI shows. Like, you guys already have the genuine product. I know modern US audiences now appreciate (to some degree) book-versions of Scandy-crime-slop, so I get that part. And people with economically stable lives love nothing more than to read about Scandinavian cities with 20k inhabitants, but with a 1000-a-year murder rate. So I get that too. But, you gotta give it a bit more than this. Especially if David Fincher has already been here with the dragon-tattoo, and that never really took off either with more remakes from that trilogy. Also, you gotta watch dailies. Ask the coffee-boy if he thinks it's disturbing and twisted that the murderer makes perturbed snowmen.

I have a very odd request. I wanna see a mini episode where all three of you listen to the song, 'The Night lights went out in Georgia' then briefly talk about the plot. Quick 5-10 minutes bonus episode or something.

Having read the original book at the far too young age of 12, the wire gizmo that the snowman uses is explained to be used by ranchers, I think to more safely remove stillborn calfs from a womb. In the book, it also says that the wire is heated, which is why it doesn't take as much force to decaffeinate someone with it.

You know what, I shouldn't have looked up Charlotte Gainsbourg's music with her dad. It's exactly what you think. Also, she's married to an Israeli and is a Zionist.

The mention of Hannibal broke me. I hate it. I hate everything about that whole genre, universe, IP, whatever we're calling things. The guy is called Hannibal. And he's a Cannibal. It is without any shadow of a doubt The Dumbest Fucking Thing. And nobody calls it out. I feel like I'm being gaslit. It's like something out of a fucking children's book. I'd get it if it was like a Nomme de Nom or whatever, some kind of criminal pseudonym. It's not. They deadass gave the character a weird name that rhymes with the word for his crime and we're all supposed to act like this is solid at least mid-brow cultural stuff (like if Frasier but with murders) and not a character who sounds like an excessively dark first draft reject from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The Silence of the Lambs won five fucking Oscars (if they gave Oscars for transphobia, sure, maybe, but then you'd think Harry Potter would have had at least a couple). Hate it. So much. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

So, what I'm getting from this is that most of your criticisms would be addressed if they had named the character Hamilcar?

I thought for a moment that the one lady was a fan of Guilty Gear, because there is a Beautiful but Steryotypical Chinese woman named Kuradoberi Jam, shortened to just Jam. She knows Kung Fu, runs a restaurant, loves Money and Pretty Boys, and has a very Steryotypical accent in the Japanese Dailog and the XRD dub. Basically she's probably inspired by Shampoo from Ranma 1/2. This has been my Autism moment for the day.

“Mr. Editor, I gave you all the footage.” - the director of this film, presumably.

I have to caveat this that I have not read the books and do not know them. But as a Norwegian with some understanding of Scandi gallows humor I always took the name "Harry Hole" to be part of the dark comedy of it all. Every Norwegian speaks English, and the name "Harry", while not *completely* unknown in Norwegian, definitely reads as an English name first. And "Hole" is not exactly a common word for hill either. So I always took it as part of the joke that the hardened substance-abusing homicide detective also has a very silly name. Also that statue park is smack in the middle of Oslo and it's great. Okay I am 15 minutes into the episode and I had to pause just to say that, now back to it.

S
Starlight Foxalope · October 25, 2026

I grew up on the west coast and "hole" is a cave, I had never heard the hill interpretation and was completely thrown. But also agree with the name, harry also being used as an adjective, meaning hmm.. lowbrow [derogatory]?

Oh please, do mention the book version! Attempting to describe the plot of the book to my friends after they watched the movie was a GREAT time

"Jo Nesbo's Detective Hole" sounds kinda like it would be the name of the world's most pathetic dive bar.

As I listen it dawns on me I've seen this picture before but it was so unremarkable that I forgot that I'd seen it.

33:06 there’s a line in the trailer where Mr Moldman goes “he’s building snowmen, cutting things into little pieces, that’s what a child does to establish order.” Of course this doesn’t make it into the final movie. Edit: was talking about the exploding house scene just before they bring it up at the end. Oops.

J
James Rule · October 21, 2026

It bothers me that they kill Bratt in the movie since she isn't killed in the novel. So it's something the writers specifically added unnecessarily. EDIT: oh, I wrote this comment too early. So that's why they killed Bratt off. Doesn't make me feel any better knowing the reason.
