The boys talk about their impressions watching the film in their youth, and revisiting it as an adult, in the aftermath of the failed War on Terror. They talk about the film as a reflection on ageing and mid-life crises, a satire on the concept of the “good Muslim”, and how the film foreshadowed what vigilante extremism would look like in the future.

Toms point about the movie really being about class dissatisfaction hit hard. I was living in Bradford when this came out and the whole 'Why wouldn't anyone feel loyalty to this country' vibes in the late 2000's were extra laughable as you walk past a boarded up city centre to your 'work to get your pittance in benefits' job.
I've only seen it once and I was somewhere between Omar's wife being in on Omar's plot, and maybe her thinking 'well, I can't stop you'

I remember seeing this in the cinema when it came out. The bit at the end with Ahmed basically being told by the MI5 guy that he was basically being disappeared was chilling. Sure, he was a religious prig but he didn’t deserve that
On most recent watch the whole movie is well more grim, tragic and fucked up than the laugh out loud it was in my memory. Still very darkly funny but goddamn i was bummed after seein it
eagerly awaiting tom's sound collage.
This is one of my favorite films and a banger of a podcast as well
