Rap Fans Discover Taylor's Track 5 "The Archer" | Journey To The Eras Tour PT27

The Journey to the Eras Tour continues! In Part 27, Rick and Robert are back to exploring Taylor Swift's songwriting, and this time we're diving into "The Archer," the emotionally vulnerable Track 5 from her Lover album.

Before listening, we discuss the significance of Track 5s throughout Taylor's discography, the song's production credits, and the deliberate contrast Taylor created between the bright, colorful, confident world of Lover and the anxiety, insecurity, and self-doubt explored in "The Archer." While the album celebrates love and freedom, Taylor wanted this song to represent the other side of those feelings. Because nobody is happy, confident, and fearless all the time.

We also get into Taylor's Madison Square Garden appearances, rumors about her potentially starting her own record company, and, naturally, a little wedding speculation. Even three months after Taylor and Travis's wedding, we were still waiting for pictures, discussing theories, and wondering just how much of the celebration she managed to keep private.

Once we get into the lyrics, the conversation takes an interesting turn. Rick and Robert explore the production, the atmospheric synths, and the deliberate use of the hunter-and-prey imagery. Robert immediately connects with the wordplay and lyrical flow, particularly the line about never growing up and how exhausting that feeling can become. Rick, meanwhile, wants more of the story before forming a complete picture of what's happening.

As we work through the second verse and chorus, we start unpacking some of the deeper psychological themes. Why does Taylor seem to anticipate something going wrong even when things are good? Why does she sometimes appear to run before anyone has a chance to hurt her? We connect those feelings to songs like "Getaway Car," "The Bolter," "Midnight Rain," and even "Pink Clouding," exploring the recurring themes of relationship anxiety, self-sabotage, and the fear of letting someone get too close.

One of our biggest discussions centers on how childhood experiences can shape what feels familiar in adulthood. When someone grows up surrounded by chaos, can a peaceful, stable relationship actually feel unfamiliar? And could constantly anticipating the next disaster become a way of protecting yourself from getting hurt?

We also explore the fascinating contrast between the song's light, airy production and its considerably darker lyrics, Taylor's willingness to expose her insecurities, and how that level of honesty creates such a powerful connection between an artist and their audience.

By the bridge and final chorus, Rick and Robert are completely on board with the production. We talk about the return of the combat imagery, the significance of "Who could ever leave me, darling? But who could stay?" and how the ending brings the entire story together. We even connect it to the Lover music video and its fishbowl imagery, before discussing how much more meaningful that final question becomes when experienced through the Eras Tour.

Two hip-hop fans, one Swiftie, and another deep dive into the songwriting that makes Taylor Swift such a fascinating artist to explore.

This song is definitely one of her most vulnerable songs. My FAVE line in that song is "All of my enemies started out friends, help me hold on to you" because that is one of the most true, and shared situations everyyyyyyone has been through. Rick going on about track 5's, Tolerate It is a track 5, but so is All Too Well, and it might be underrated, but I love the song White Horse, which is also a track 5 off of Fearless. It's not a track 5 but I think the boys would love LOML as well, and I would love to see if they get that acronym correct before it's revealed in the song....... I don't think either of them have heard LOML right? To be honest, and I know they are not on the Era's Tour, but I am still waiting for the reactions to Haunted (Live from the Speak Now tour is INCREDIBLE) I cannot wait for All Too Well lol! I know you have someone joining for Better Than Revenge but I am soooo looking forward to that as well. I assume most of these will be after The Era's Tour, aside from ATW which I think is coming out soon? Anyways great reaction, and I love that they enjoy this song as well :)

Which Eras Tour are you watching?

I’m wondering the same thing. I’m hoping they do the final eras with TTPD. I’m really wanting them to see the final one. To me the sound and cinematography is better on the final.
