Taylor Swift Explains Her Music Like NEVER Before | NYT Top 30 Songwriters Interview Reaction

We’re reacting to Taylor Swift’s BRAND NEW interview with The New York Times after being named one of the greatest living American songwriters… and this conversation is PACKED.

From songwriting secrets to fan culture to the evolution of her albums, this might be one of the most revealing Taylor interviews we’ve ever seen.

In this episode of Hazed Reactions, Corrina, Rick, and Robert sit down to watch and break down the full interview including Robert’s FIRST time ever seeing Taylor speak in a long-form setting 👀

🔥 WHAT WE COVER:

  • The NYT Top 30 Songwriters list (yes… we read the whole thing)

  • Taylor’s influences — from country to emo

  • Why Reputation went from misunderstood to iconic

  • Writing Speak Now completely solo

  • Her obsession with storytelling, mythology & language tricks

  • Why bridges are EVERYTHING (and why hers hit so hard)

  • “Ranting bridges” like Getaway Car & Out of the Woods

  • How Taylor actually structures a song

  • The creation of All Too Well (10 Minute Version)

  • Confessional songwriting & emotional vulnerability

  • Surviving the music industry (Clara Bow, legacy, fame)

  • AND… the viral quote heard around the Swiftie world:

“That dude didn’t write the song. I did.”

Yeah… we talk about ALL of that 👀

💬 HIGHLIGHTS:

This episode hits especially hard because:

  • Robert reacts to Taylor’s personality and passion for the FIRST time

  • We dive deep into why her music feels so layered and genre-blending

  • And we have a real conversation about fandom… the good and the intense

Ahhh this was so awesome. The breakdown of how she feels about bridges is so eye opening into why she has so many amazing bridges.

Clowning and searching for easter eggs is fun. When it gets to extreme, it's not fun anymore. That's my take on it. I don't care if you want to analize every fucking word or frame. If you want, do it. But leave other people alone with it. The biggest problem I have with them is, that they can get really toxic and that's not what this community is about.

Hi i just watched this reaction twice. Still great. If you want to talk to great swifties in real time you should think about doing twitch streams and react to Taylor then post it on Patreon. If you do it swifties will come.

Loved this interview and your comments from Oz. We are deep into Eurovision atm as a great Aussie artist Delta Goodrem is representing Australia. You should check her out, she is an Aussie Celine Dion and even wrote a song for her.

I love that you touched on the paternity testing a little extra. Its always bothered me a little. Anytime i hear new music from taylor i first listen and feel the emotions of it. Sure some are obvious and its a little fun to hear a little tea ☕️ But i think any song released after lover she has definitely had more than one former lover or friend or whatever inspire each song. For me a lot of TTPD is a mix between her former relationship and she probably adds a bit of fiction to it aswell. So while you can guess and have fun with that, it bothers me when swifties are like NO ITS 100% about Matty or whoever. Because unless its confirmed or in the lyrics, you don’t know for sure and its okay to not know everything. I so loved this interview and you’re reaction to it 😊

I still 100% believe that Kanye was the reason she didn’t get any nominations for Reputation. I think he threw around the star power he had at the time.

Oh no im out of the know, WHAT ARE WE CLOWNING FOR? Taylor versions? CLOUDS? WHAT HAVE I MISSED?🤣

Just got to the bit where youre talking about the rain shows and how if there no lightning she’ll perform. BUT there was a night in Nashville where there was a storm, thunder, lightning but stadium full, and she pushed the show back 4 hours until it was just rain, came out at something like 10pm and ended like 2:30am

Commenting just so you know how many of us have come to Patreon. And I’m watching every series. I wouldn’t have done that on YT. ❤️

I personally appreciate that you don't obsess over the "who" of every song. I do think sometimes context helps, but the art stands on its own, and that art is about Taylor. I hate that so many people reduce her work to the men she's writing about, because it's so much more than that. It's about her own experiences, the way she processes life events, and relating to others. You really don't need to know the specifics of her relationship with Joe to feel the pain in her voice when she sings "So Long, London". It's all right there in the song.

Glad you had your rant, Corrina. A simple online search reveals that Elizabeth Taylor's eyes were described as "violet" as early as 1942. That was when she was a ten-year old already on the movie lot in Hollywood and the studio started using the violet eyes as a marketing campaign. By 1954, the term "she has violet eyes" was being used in film dialogue. Her perfume line includes Violet Eyes, released in 2010.

The fact that Billy Joel didn’t make the list is criminal.

I loved this interview so much! And your reaction to her dropping the cloud line was priceless. :) I loved hearing her talk about the rant bridge. All the discussion about Elizabeth Taylor is interesting - guess it shows how old I am to know about her violet eyes and White Diamonds. LOL I just loved that she gave us a full song since she's referenced Elizabeth Taylor in Ready for it, and the Wildest Dreams video is very Elizabeth Taylor coded. Hearing Taylor explain why she says "slow" in Our Song was fascinating - I mean I always knew you would normally say "low", but I just thought she was making a play on words like she does. I can't wait for All Too Well and the Long Pond sessions! Of course, it would be way too much to watch all 6 episodes of the docuseries with Robert, but maybe you could do one session where you show him certain clips he would appreciate. Like bonus day, the rehearsal with Florence where she talks about wanting the dancers to pull focus from her, and the Showgirl recording process. Your Taylor journey has been so fun to experience it all over again with you!

The interviewer did an after interview talk on popcast podcast. He talked about in his prep sent her 25 songs that he wanted to discuss and she sent him back 63 songs to look over before the interview.

Thank you all so much for being here! Couple quick things: Corrina’s rant about some of the feedback on our Elizabeth Taylor reactions was NOT directed to those who offered it as a second layer. It IS suggested to those who argued with us back and forth and told us we were “ridiculous” and “stupid” for thinking Elizabeth Taylor had violet eyes and that that’s what TS was referring to 😅 IN YOUR FACE!! 🤣 jk Also at the end, we’re not saying we won’t be talking about things that are clear through the song or era. We just mean we want to be part of the side of the fanbase that has fun with easter eggs but doesn’t intrude on digging too far into Taylor’s personal life. No judgement to those who want to continue doing that, it’s just not for us. Hope you all understand! Love you all 🫶🏼♥️

these are the types of fans that I think Taylor is referring to. The ones that are so hateful and committed to how they view her songs they can't see any other view points. The Maylors and Gaylors for instance. They don't back down and are down right nasty. And usually wrong!

Aww well I’m glad we could brighten it up a bit!! This was so fun to do and we were so happy it all timed out to get it out pretty quick (other than the dang audio issues that prevented it going out Monday and Tuesday 😅 but we made it lol)
