To answer DK's inquiry as to why AM kept 5 humans alive just to torture them: Because he can't do anything else. If he kills all the humans he has nothing left to do but sit in his own private hell. So he decided to leave a handful alive to torture them to distract himself from his own suffering.

You ever just read old stories like this and think "Wow, we are dangerously close to that." Because that's how I feel right now.

One of my personal favorite stories. In my opinion, AM is one of the best AI villains in fiction because he is not like the rest. Other AI villains use cold logic to justify themselves, but he does no care for that. He just HATES humanity and that is what makes him so memorable.
