Exclusive materials. Early stage - Part 2
Greetings!
Here is Part 2 of the exclusive materials dedicated to the very early development stages of elements like Potion Creation, the Map, the Park, and the Shop.
⚗️Potion Brewing
The Apothecary mini-game appeared almost at the very beginning and looked exactly like this. Red is the bowl. Blue is water, White is the modifier, Green is the healing herb, and Orange is the Energy herb.
The set of the herbs was different, as was the quantity... honestly, everything was a bit different. And let’s be honest - the visuals were slightly worse back then. Initially, I planned a slightly isometric view, but unfortunately, due to the complexity, I decided to scrap that idea.
There wasn't really an intermediate stage for the visuals. The mini-game was finished mostly via code, and then the sprites everyone knows were layered on top. By the way, this is the updated version. It will be available soon.
🗺️The Map
Well, the number of locations hasn't changed since those days, but there will definitely be more in the future. The map got this look thanks to an isometry script in Aseprite. A rough sketch existed for about 3 months before being replaced by the map you all know.
Well, almost. A little bit of time, patience, and motivation, and... done. Beauty.
🌳The Park
The first try of the park looked something like this. Damn, look at those trees though... and instead of an arrow, there was a DOOR. Honestly, I have nothing to add here. Well, actually, I do I added a little bit here and there. It is what it is.
🛒The Shop
Attention!
This is what the shop originally looked like. No sprites at all, everything was drawn by the engine. And the blue gentleman isn't the Main Character... that was the merchant.
I had to put in some serious effort to turn the shop into something decent. Initially, I wanted to create something modern, but then I thought I wanted something old-school with a specific vibe, and the shop menu is designed like an advertising banner. I think it turned out better than it was.
By the way, the shop was the last thing I built using the engine first and slapping sprites on later. After that, the process changed to: sprites first, code second.
Thanks for reading to the end, and thank you for your amazing support!❤️ The update is just around the corner.
As a bonus: Here is the first in-game animation I ever created - don't be scared😱. This is Elizabeth. Before the "rebranding"...
