Apple’s requirements will be hitting Patreon as of 4 November 2024 📱 Here’s what you need to know 💕
I am touching base with you about some upcoming changes that are happening on the Patreon platform next month...here's what you need to know
Hey nudeis!
I hope this message finds you well and in the nude 🙊
So I am touching base with you about some upcoming changes that are happening here on the Patreon platform next month.
As of 4 November 2024, Apple is requiring that Patreon use their in-app purchasing system and remove all other billing systems from the Patreon iOS (iPhone Operating System) app or else risk being kicked out of the App Store altogether.
This has two major consequences for creators:
Apple will be applying their 30% App Store fee to all new memberships purchased in the Patreon iOS app as of 4 November 2024 (I mean, that’s insane!).
Any creator currently on first-of-the-month (which is me) or per-creation billing plans will have to switch over to subscription billing to continue earning in the iOS app, because that’s the only billing type Apple’s in-app purchase system supports.
📣 I will NOT be adopting the ‘subscription billing’ method at this point in time (as required by Apple) as it is proving to be a logistical nightmare.
Patreon understands that Apple’s new requirement/subscription billing method does not currently work for many of its creators (like myself), and so they are giving us until November 2025 to adopt the new model (where, by this stage, EVERY creator on Patreon (including myself), will need to adopt the subscription billing model).
In the meantime, and until I can figure out a sound solution that will result in as smooth a transition as possible for myself as a creator and for my community, I will be sticking with my current ‘1st of the month’ billing model.
I am assured that Patreon are doing everything that they can to support creators who will have to involuntarily adopt this model in order to remain on the platform. I am trusting that, in this time, Patreon are working on creating new tools that will enable creators, like myself, to transition over to the new model by November 2025 in a way that is as least disruptive and as efficient and as effective as possible in facilitating us to continue to share our work with our community in a way that isn't the logistical nightmare that it currently would be if we were to adopt this new billing model.
Because Apple's requirements are effective as of 4 November 2024, and because I will not be adopting its 'subscription billing' model at this point in time, it basically means that people will not be able to sign up to my Patreon IN the iOS app. So, yes, this means that I am sacrificing potential sign ups from those within the iOS app. But, with no feasible solution for a feasible transition at this point in time, it’s a trade off I have to make.
BUTT! Even if I did adopt this new model next month, I would be encouraging those people (Apple users) to sign up via the web anyhow (rather than IN the iOS app) in order to avoid Apple's hefty in-app 30% processing fee!
So, whilst this information may not necessarily be relevant to many of you right now, it’s good to know for those of you who may cancel and then look to re-subscribe and can’t figure out why you can’t do so via the iOS app.
MOVING FORWARD:
As of 4 November 2024, you will not be able to sign up to my Patreon IN the iOS app.
You can still sign up to my Patreon on an iOS device, but you’ll need to do so via the web rather than IN the iOS app (which also means you’ll avoid Apple’s in-app 30% processing fee anyway! Yay!).
I will be staying on the ‘1st of the month’ billing model, and so you will continue to be billed on the 1st of each month, as you have been up until now (unless you cancel of course).
New paying Patrons/those of you who decide to cancel and then sign up again will continue to be charged upfront and then on the 1st of each month thereafter (as per the ‘1st of the month’ billing model).
I will continue creating and sharing content as I have been doing so here on Patreon since 2020.
KEY POINTS:
I will NOT be adopting the ‘subscription billing’ model (as required by Apple) at this point in time.
I have until November 2025 to migrate over to the ‘subscription billing’ model, when it will become obligatory for every creator on Patreon to employ the ‘subscription billing’ model.
Until I migrate over to the ‘subscription billing’ model, you will no longer be able to sign up to my Patreon within the iOS app.
At this point in time, these changes will only impact those of you who may be looking to sign up/manually renew your membership on an Apple device IN the iOS app…because you’ll no longer be able to. Rather, you’ll need to do so via the web (but you will still be able to enjoy my content via the app even if you've signed up via the web).
In the meantime, I will continue to explore avenues that have the potential to facilitate a smooth transition over to the subscription billing model that I’ll need to adopt by November 2025, as I’m sure there may also be some of you who prefer this method of billing anyhow.
Currently, with the way that I share ‘benefits’ here on Patreon (and as I have done since 2020), the subscription billing model prompts obstacles for ‘benefits’ such as my ‘private Snapchat’ and anything dropbox-related…such as ‘The Nude Archives’, ‘Pose of the Week Library’, ‘Photoset Archives’ etc…and these, obviously, make up a large part of what I share exclusively here on Patreon.
SO, WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE OLD ‘1ST OF THE MONTH’ BILLING MODEL VS THE NEW ‘SUBSCRIPTION BILLING’ MODEL?
Patreon’s original ‘1st-of-the-month’ billing model has meant that people pay upfront and then their subscription renews on the 1st of each month thereafter, regardless of when they signed up. So, previously, if someone decided to join my Patreon on the 15th of the month, they would be charged upfront and then their subscription would renew on the 1st of the next month and then the 1st of each month thereafter.
‘Subscription billing’ is a model whereby someone who signs up on the 6th of a month will be charged upfront on that date and will next be charged on the 6th of the next month and the 6th of each month thereafter.
Subscription billing is one of the more common subscriptions models out there (think Netflix, Spotify, etc).
But, when I started out on Patreon back in 2020, they only offered this ‘1st-of-the-month’ billing model and ‘per creation’ billing.
So, over the past 5 years, I have adhered to and built my entire Patreon business around its original ‘1st-of-the-month’ billing model.
And whilst Patreon introduced ‘subscription billing’ as an option for creators to adopt back in 2022, I chose not to adopt it for very logistically-challenging reasons from the back end.
