Update - I'm learning Krita
I'm in the process of learning to use Krita instead of Photoshop, as I lost my 15 year old copy of PS in the C-drive crash. Krita is better in many ways, and free, but missing one tool I used a lot, and all the brushes are different, so it's a bit like learning to ride a bicycle backwards. :)
Other than that I also need to find a video editing software, hopefully that doesn't cost a lot, as I also lost my Camtasia license from 2011. DaVinci didn't work (probably my old GPU), and all the other free ones seem to all have different limitations that make them useless.

Try Clip Studio Paint.... I use and it's fine for me....
Davinci being out and presumably blender (all the other free ones) is pretty tough spot. Out of curiosity whats the tool from PS you are missing?
a small thing, but I used it a lot. After making changes, for instance a big brush stroke, or AutoContrast, or HSV, or Curves, I'd click the Fade button and fine tune opacity and mode. I know I can copy-paste to a new layer, do the edit and then fade the layer, then drop it down, but yeah. It's way slower and less intuitive. :)

Looks like you could benefit from David Revoy's tutorials and breakdowns (https://www.davidrevoy.com). He writes 'Pepper and Carrot' 100% with free software, quite impressive!
