Crash Course Lecture #2 Coming Soon!
We are so excited to release our second-ever Crash Course Lecture! Because typical Crash Course videos need to cover a lot of curricular ground in a short period of time, there are lots of potential rabbit holes we don’t have time to explore. Enter Crash Course Lectures! These longer-form videos are all about the rabbit holes. In Lectures, we look super deeply at one big idea rather than summarizing a whole area of study.
And our upcoming lecture is a doozy. Social commentator and author Amanda Montell explores the linguistic strategies that cults use to manipulate people… which are also, weirdly, the same strategies used by gyms, companies, fandoms, and more. In her words, there’s something almost mystical about the way certain words hit our brains. But it’s not only mystical; it’s also (drumroll, please)... Science. We explore the evolutionary hardwiring of our brains and consider how it might be clashing with the modern world. And we dive deep into Amanda’s family history, including how her dad escaped from a cult.
It’s a fascinating journey that we can’t stop thinking about, and it drops September 16th!

This is so exciting! My copy of Cultish just came in a week or so ago, it’ll be great hearing a lecture from the author.
