Natalism and The New York Times
As part of the national push by natalists to roll back the clock on gender policy in the United States, recent articles about birth rates have started popping up in the country's paper of record. One of those articles, published just last week, was written by someone we've covered quite a bit on the show already. This week, Josh and June check it out alongside four other articles about birth rates in The New York Times to get a sense of how the issue is being framed, both in good and bad faith, as a matter of news and public opinion.

hole got larger
As a Canadian I already had a low opinion of McGill but the students and faculty bring themselves further shame if they failed to run Lyman Stone out of town on a rail 👎🏽👎🏽👎🏽
Also since he's quoting UN population projections he's likely seen that Nigeria is due to pass the US around 2050 to be the world's 3rd most populous country and I *know* that has him trembling in his little racist boots.
So the same people that say tech and AI will fix everything are also screaming that the world will end if we don't all start busting raw right now. It's almost as if the tech people don't believe what they say
27 minutes in and all i can think is "strong independent woman" was only ever a financial note. The problem with modern men that seems to have developed is that men aren't well rounded human beings, can't take care of themselves, and lack the ability to imagine an independent future. Case in point, how many men have no furniture except a matress on the floor?
The people who die from raw milk are kids :/ this is why it needs to be regulated
[Lyman Stone reading through the Racist Monster Manual] “Hmmm, okay so you’re a Somalian, that means you have a +5 to graft and a +2 to welfare usage.” Also VERY funny that he thinks there’s any way to avoid the contraction of the United States. Shits cooked - capitalism enjoyers got exactly what it said on the tin.
Will we tax everything through the strait? Who knows. But one thing we *can* rely on is; As a nation, we’re gonna keep stabbing ourselves in the face and genitals to own the libs (?)
I wonder why that woman's kid was feeling sick and throwing up at breakfast "Raw milk butter she churned herself" I have a theory...
i'm only a third of the way through the episode, but i can't help but wonder if part of the downshift in teen pregnancies is parents being proactive in getting their teens access to medical contraceptives like hormonal birth control, etc. i don't have kids, but if i did, that would def be on my mind in light of, uh, everything
Two thoughts: Somalia is across the tiny bab el mandeb strait from Yemen. We already have a huge military presence there. Both those facts make it a convenient new Default Evil Country, especially as the oil war drags on. And that weird paragraph about bedrotting towns? The item in that list that caught my ear was that the decline of these towns is “destroying property values.” Who still lives in America’s rotting towns and owns property? The petit bourgeois Boomers. Gotta give them a reason to care, toss them a bone. Maybe if the grandkids would just settle down they’d come visit, etc.
I maintain that a large part of this “fertility crisis” shit, other than the primary factors of sexism and racism of course, is people assuming that the post-WWII Baby Boom was the historical norm rather than an aberration rooted in a particular historical moment. Most of the people who could remember what it was like before that are now dead.
“…the average age that humans had children throughout the past 250,000 years is 26.9. Furthermore, fathers were consistently older, at 30.7 years on average, than mothers, at 23.2 years on average, but the age gap has shrunk in the past 5,000 years, with the study’s most recent estimates of maternal age averaging 26.4 years. The shrinking gap seems to largely be due to mothers having children at older ages.” https://news.iu.edu/live/news/28109-study-reveals-average-age-at-conception-for-men From 2023.
