JD Vance

The Vice President of the United States and his wife Usha are expecting their fourth baby, setting an apparent example for their fellow natalists. But just how intertwined is JD Vance with the natalist movement overall and what does it have to do with Usha’s new podcast about children’s books? This week, June and Josh dig into JD Vance’s history with conservatism and Catholicism to try to figure it out.

The motherhood medals in the USSR were a part of the same demographic policy that forbade abortion for non-medical reasons during 36-55'. But they themselves are much less weird when you put them into the context of them being instituted in 44' and the sheer loss of life that happened during the war and the fact that they were tied not to birth, but to parenting in general and the kids one adopted were also counted. Which made sense considering the number of orphans after the war

CPAC has had a Hungary edition since 2022 and the mutual admiration goes back even further. https://harpers.org/archive/2019/08/the-call-of-the-drums-hungarian-far-right/ Fidesz is also super corrupt, so it's really not surprising that there was in-kind and financial support for the event and/or group.

Usha may well have voted Democrat in the past, but it’s wrong to assume all Indian immigrants would be progressive or left leaning. She’s from an upper middle class background, it’s likely her family would support Modi and the BJP.

Speaking of child's education content in YouTube, all of Reading Rainbow is on YouTube for free and I think more parents should be told that.

j & j: listening to y’all talk about Usha’s contradictions, politics v. her Indian background: she & JD were apparently little disciples of the Tiger Mom lady at Yale. yeah, the one who wrote that book way back whenever. She ascended within the right wing sphere- check out the way she presented her daughter to Gorsuch 🤢

My maternal grandfather was ostensibly raised Catholic but avoided going to church and didn't really practice a good chunk of his adult life. My mother told me my grandmother used to take her and her brothers (my uncles) to church without him. It wasn't until they were adults that he had this pivot back and became what I call "born again" Catholic. After my grandmother passed away from ovarian cancer 20 years ago he just slid further and further into his conservative, fascist beliefs and used the Catholic faith as an excuse, even when my sister and I went to Catholic school for 11 years and could school him on a lot of Jesus' teachings and Catholic Canon to the opposite of a lot of the hateful things he was saying. (I'm not defending the evil the Church has done over the years obviously or its shitty politics - I'm talking mostly about the core Christian tenets of God's love and forgiveness and the Church's general pro-science, curiosity, and general respect of other views of the world). He died before Pope Leo took over but he would have LOATHED him.
