It's an older disney movie about a boy in highschool who is the best baseball player on the team but he also realizes he "wants to try cooking" so him and his BEST FRIENDS "cook dinner together" and they had SO MUCH FUN.. Then the main characters family makes fun of him and calls ONLY HIM a girl because he "cooked dinner". he then learns that he "loves to cook" and all his friends turn on him and HATE him for "loving to cook" it's truly the most INSANE allegory for being gay and it's so funny to watch because it's so obvious hahahaha Please watch it!! EDIT: just to clarify, it is a feel good movie that at the end does teach kids to love what the love, and that your family and friends will support you, but before that is like.. are we really talking about cooking? LMAO

HSM was filmed in Salt Lake City where I grew up. East High and West High are both real schools (and actual rivals in real life). East apparently still has Sharpay’s pink locker in the hall. I’ve been in there and it’s SURREAL seeing that lunch room in real life. The theatre is not actually at East, but it is a real high school’s theatre (Murray High School). I have also been in Troy’s house. I lived in the same neighborhood growing up and went to school with one of their kids. It is in fact massive. Gabriella’s house is just down the street.

i don't think ryan and sharpay were really villains, they were high schoolers. antagonists for sure, but they didn't really do much worse than the basketball and uhhh brain things teams. everyone in the film is emotionally flip-flopping and trying to figure out their personal priorities and what matters in life, which i think is very appropriate for the age bracket they're meant to be representing. that said, i think ryan and sharpay's positions in the final song wasn't really a reflection of their place in the narrative so much as it was just a big ensemble piece with all the characters having a dance party and singing about the moral of the story.

dan you're wrong about the second movie it contains multitudes! the themes are definitely still centered around troy struggling with where he should direct his focus but it leads better into the third one, him looking to his future, there's like a class privilege narrative, the songs are incredible, you guys didn't even get to have a moment with the bisexual anthem I Don't Dance, song of all time!!!! and Fabulous my beloved!!!!!! and the third movie had bops AND budget, it's iconic! the 2nd movie is a fan favourite for a reason and i agree but the third movie gets so slept on, the changing sets, the production!! iconic song Scream, iconic song The Boys Are Back!!! i know you guys are never gonna watch the sequels, much as it pains me, but i promise you the sequels are better than the first movie and it's not even close. (i cannot vouch for the other spinoffs i'm sure they're great i haven't seen them)
