Actually, diners are plenty common in larger cities as well, both historic ones that have been around forever and newer ones the opened to cater to that market.

In a big city, probably not. Diners tend to be more in smaller cities and small towns due to the style of restaurant not really being big enough or expensive enough to survive in a large city.
