Since I saw an interesting comment about this sketch on reddit, I thought I'd throw a few quick thoughts here. It's a very well executed sketch, but this could be an extremely powerful scene in a hypothetical comic page / multi-panel sketch where the multiple panels would give the moment room to breathe, since it's not a single sketch having to pull double or triple duty of giving exposition as well as the narrative and emotional aspect of the art itself. But the practical realities of a quick 1 hour sketch are always going to be a limiting factor, and it works very well within those limitations.

The snout in the pov is a great touch! Normally, our brains filter out or nose from our vision, so I wonder how well it would filter out a larger snout. But also, since she's rarely in that form, her brain wouldn't be used to filtering it out.

This is actually beautiful. Her whole life she's internalized being ugly & not belonging, only to now find those who not only accept, but think she's exceptional. She's finally able to grow as a person and belong. ❤️

Raine, that could either have been because you mother was human and her point of view might have changed by now, or because of your mother's dislike for your father. One way or anther her point of view was biased. Call me damaged, but I'm one of the few people that don't think human babies look cute. Maybe because I was never a father, or it's one of the reasons I never wanted to be a father.

Raine is *beautiful* in BOTH forms and simply *wonderful* inside her kind heart
"Hard to look at" doesn't necessarily mean the same thing as "ugly." Painful reminders are often hard to look at, even (or sometimes especially) if they are beautiful. That doesn't mean Raine's mom should use that phrase carelessly (or that she means it that way), but it might be careless rather than intentional cruelty. Still, it's done long-lasting damage to Raine's self-image & self esteem.
You're right. I've seen women dote on a baby she had as long as she was in a good relationship with the baby's father. But, if that relationship dies, the mom will quite often (inadvertently) take it out on the baby simply because the baby reminds the mom too much of the father.
You know, the wording makes me think her mom wasn't calling her ugly, just hard to be around. Given what we know about how stuff went down with her, it can make sense that Raine became a lens for her own pain. It doesn't make it better, per se, but it does change how Mary was a less than spectacular mother.
Screw Raine's mom. What a fucking thing to say to your daughter. Jesus.
