Original Trace and Flora
Trace the dragon rider and Kaylia (proto-Flora) the aspiring mage, both original concepts for the character before Twokinds, suggested by Combak! I ultimately didn't have Trace being a dragon rider as an official thing simply because... drawing dragons was too hard lol I did eventually bring it back a few years later with the introduction of Nora and her relationship with Trace.

This might be a good story for an alt world or later in the universe.
I have always had that feeling about Trace... So delightful to learn that Trace originally was supposed to have connection with dragons, just as I imagine our Trace to develop it in the future.

Creating characters can be quite a journey. I wrote a pair of Sci-Fi novels (published in 2013) that involved humans and an alien race. The main alien character was from a race of felines who were similar to highly-evolved house cats. She, along with rest of her kind, ended up completely different than when I started the original short story that proceeded to take on a life of its own!
They were always a pair. And a lot of fun.

I like how Trace holds onto Nora like Jane holds onto Dragon in "Jane and the Dragon." Horns make great handles.

I love looking at concept art. Seeing a concept be in the womb, and all the potential it could have had. Oh a slight difference could mean we would have ended up with an entirely different character. And of course trying to see if you could fit a concept in the modern iteration and make it work.

The roles seem to be reversed when I look at it. Trace became the mage and Flora’s personality could’ve fit the dragon rider role in some ways.
