Human are actually what’s known as “persistence hunters”. Since the dawn of time the way we’d hunt is by wearing down our prey instead of fighting them head-on. It’s cause we can strategically conserve and exert energy as well as fairly accurately hunt prey over long periods of time and long distances. We have the sapience to withstand hunger and our animalistic instincts that crave instant gratification for the sake of a far better bounty at the cost of more effort. If we think our prey is too strong to kill right now, we injure them a bit and let them get away, only for us to try again in a few days after leisurely keeping track of them, but they’re a less intelligent animal and they exert far too much energy in those few days. Making them weaker. People constantly wonder how it was possible for ancient humans to hunt things like mammoths, this is how. And like how the story implies, it’s probably terrifying for the animal. They live in a survival of the fittest environment that’s very fast paced, when other predator animals loose sight of their prey, they usually give up to conserve energy, we don’t, this confuses the shit out of them.

Imo, Breathless fails as a Mother Horse Eyes imitator, even though I thought the reveal that the narrator was an animal was executed very well. The cats in MHE have their own culture, but the Breathless bison(?) talks about their herd the way a human would. Apart from the twist reveal that the narrator is an animal, the whole allure of having an animal narrator is that they tell the story from a perspective completely alien to humans.

Was the first story perhaps about the slaughtering of the buffalos? The description of the attackers standing on the bodies of the dead reminded me of that. The lack of the mention of guns makes me think it might not be. Edit: Wedi’s story about his daddy reminded me of the story my mama told about when we lived in the “rat house”. Apparently he’d stay up late into the night, in the pitch dark, the only light being from the moon, waiting with a gun to shoot any rat he saw scurry about.

This is the most satisfying rabbit trail filled episode in a while, I love when these episodes go on random "the more you know" conversations

My dear Wendigoon, you have transubstaintion a bit wrong; it is not transformed into the body and blood of Christ when it is consumed, it is changed when it is consecrated in the Mass. The appearance stays the same, but the substance is changed. It's one of the reasons why traditional Catholics do not receive in the hands, as the traditional view is that only the priest's hands are consecrated to handle the body and blood of our Lord. And Catholics also use real wine, even for first Communion.

The animals killing newborn story is interesting because it really is just something animals do sometimes. Male lions often eat their own cubs, for example. Growing up, one of my friend’s dog had puppies and ate them (indoor dog, well fed, etc) So it’s interesting to frame it as some evil creature or entity that also affects humans.

I understand that the quality of writing improving is a good thing technically, but some of the writing of these stories you guys keep choosing, either ones from your subreddit or from no sleep are just so hard to follow when you listen in the background

Growing up I had found a turkey that fell off a poultry truck and wandered into our yard and I named her sugar. She was very stupid and sweet and never left our front yard and would follow me around while I played. One day I was waiting at our back sliding glass door to go outside and play, when I saw our 3 dogs run up to the chain link fence where I saw sugar wandering around on the other side. They were all barking at her and before I realized what was going on I watched sugar stick her head through the fence and our dogs latch on to her neck and pull her right through the chain links and just rip her to shreds as 4 year old me just stood there screaming and crying.

Coyotes are terrifying, where I live they started breeding with dogs and the county begged people to kill off the offspring. Country / farmlands can be fucking brutal. Raccoons and Possums are also the devil when it comes to chickens, we had a raccoon decimate a flock of chickens (we couldn't figure out what was getting into the coop).
