Pump Check
The gym closed at ten. She was still in the locker room at 10:40, and it was your fault, and she was delighted about it.
You'd programmed the session yourself: the arm-and-chest pump protocol, high reps, no rest, the one you only assign when you want her swollen past reason. And you'd added one line at the bottom of the plan, the line she'd read nine times on the bus: wear the gold one. send me proof.
The gold one. The little metallic posing bikini you'd bought her half as a joke a year ago, back when it merely struggled. It did not struggle anymore. It surrendered on contact. The top was a narrow gold band pinched into two small cups, and a prayer, and against the body she brought into the locker room tonight it read less like clothing and more like garnish, a strip of foil lost somewhere on the front of a landslide. She'd looked at herself in the mirror when she tied it on, and giggled, and taken a deep breath, and watched the knot behind her back consider its options.
Then she'd raised her phone, tilted her head, and gone to work, because you'd said send me proof, and there was no sentence in any language she obeyed faster.
*Shot one.*
She held the phone out and leaned down into the lens, coming in close and cute, one curled fist tucked up under her chin, ponytail flopping loose, orange bangs everywhere, giving the camera the full warm blast of that grin. The pose looked innocent. The pose was a trap. Because leaning in put her shoulder in the frame, and her shoulder arrived like weather. The deltoid filled the entire left half of the photo, a boulder of pale pumped mass wider than her whole beaming face, its three heads carved apart by the session you'd written, the front slope of it round and taut and shining under the locker-room fluorescents. Her fist, the cute little tucked-up fist, sat directly beside it for scale, and the scale was ruinous: knuckles like a doll's against a sphere of muscle that would not have fit in a motorcycle helmet. She checked the preview and squeaked with joy. The shoulder had photographed even bigger than it felt.
*Her:* proof
*Her:* thats just the SHOULDER baby. wait till you see what the rest of the session did
The dots came up. She held the phone in both hands and vibrated gently while she waited, bouncing on her toes, and the bouncing made everything on her front bounce in sympathy and nearly ended the top early.
*You:* good girl. all of it. every angle. take your time.
Good girl. She read it twice and felt it land the way it always lands, a warm coin dropped straight down her spine, and her whole body answered it with a slow involuntary swell, the pump tightening a notch everywhere at once. She laughed at herself, giddy, alone, enormous, and set up the next shot.
*Shot two.*
She stepped back between the rows of powder-blue lockers, filled the aisle, and simply let herself be wide. No trick pose. Arms hanging easy at her sides, bowed out wide by everything behind them, grin enormous. That was the joke of it: this was her relaxed, and relaxed she still blotted out the corridor, lats easing out from under her arms like a door opening, the aisle's clean lines of lockers converging behind a torso that made them look like toy drawers. And front and center, the reason the photo existed: her chest. The pump had gotten there first and stayed longest. Each pec sat high and full and absurd, a slab of pale muscle deeper than her head was long, and the gold top, poor thing, had given up any claim to coverage and now simply marked locations, two small metallic flags planted on the lower slopes of a mountain range, the fabric between them hauled straight and singing with tension across a cleavage line so deep it held its own shadow. When she breathed, the slabs rose, and the flags rode up with them, and somewhere behind her back the knot creaked.
She sent it. Your reply came fast this time.
*You:* the top is losing.
*Her:* the top is TRYING baby. its been trying since i tied it. should i apologize to it or to you
*You:* flex and let's find out.
*Shot three.*
She crouched into the lens, brought her fists together low, and crunched into the pose you call her most-muscular and she calls the big squish, one eye winking shut, grin going crooked with effort, and everything above her waist detonated at once. The camera caught her chest best of all. Squeezed between her shoulders the two slabs ground together and rose, crowding up toward her chin, their inner edges crashing into a central line of separation deep enough to lose a hand in, the middle of the gold top pinched and dragged into the shadow between them, the fabric hauled so taut over each slab that it shone like it had been poured on. Somewhere inside her chest the pressure found a voice, one long fibrous creak, loud enough for the phone's mic. Across the crest of each pec the pump had pulled the skin thin, and the striations came through in feathered fans, dozens of fine hard lines all pointing inward like the muscle had been combed, and one fat vein surfaced along the top of the left slab and ran down into the shadow between them, throbbing visibly, right on camera, in time with her happy hammering heart.
She had to take the shot three times because the first two came out blurry from the effort trembling up her arms. She sent the sharp one.
*Her:* did you hear that creak baby? that was the TOP. i squeezed and it begged
*Her:* did i do good? is that the flex you wanted or should i
*You:* that's my girl. now get the arms in frame. both of them. up.
*Shot four.*
Both of them. Up. She stretched the phone high overhead at arm's length, camera looking straight down at her, and raised the other arm to match, and from that angle the photo became a canyon shot: her flushed grinning face small and bright at the center, and rising on either side of it the two biggest things she owns. The right one hung closer to the lens, and from that height its whole architecture lay bare: the bicep swelling off the bone in a split-crowned dome nearly the size of her head, its peak crowding toward her wrist, the triceps hanging beneath it in a slab so thick the whole arm read as one continuous mass, and the pump-fattened veins wrapping the entire construction like cargo netting, one thick rope crossing the crown of the peak and forking twice on its way down. Her hand at the top of all of it, small and pink, gripping the phone, looked like it had been borrowed from someone much further away. The lockers in the background sat somewhere miles below her armpits, irrelevant. She looked like a landscape that had learned to smile up at a drone.
*You:* bigger than last week. measurably. I can see it from here.
*Her:* you CAN?? i thought so too but i thought maybe i was being greedy
*Her:* im not done. the pumps still coming in. i can feel it filling. hold on baby im gonna show you the back of the peaks
*Shot five.*
That was the discovery of the night, the thing she could feel happening between shots: the pump was still climbing. Every pose squeezed more blood into muscle that had no obvious room left, and every one of your replies did something the poses couldn't, opened some valve inside her that made the swelling feel like praise. For the fifth shot she laced both hands behind her head, elbows flared wide, wink and grin, the pose that looked casual and was anything but: folding her arms back rolled the biceps into full contracted knots beside her ears and flared everything beneath. The camera caught the peaks from the front, twin domes bracketing that sweet flushed face, each one shining with sweat and visibly fuller than shot four, the skin over them gone glossy-tight, and beneath her arms her lats fanned out and out and out until she was more silhouette than corridor. Somewhere in the middle of all that mass, nearly forgotten, the gold top held its two flags in place by friction and hope. A drop of sweat ran the full length of her left bicep vein like a bead on a wire, and she felt it go, and shivered, and the shiver made the peaks jump, and she had to take the picture again because the first one caught her mid-giggle at her own body.
*Her:* baby the locker room mirror cant even hold all of me anymore. i checked. i stick out both sides
*Her:* one more. saving the best for last. its the one you always ask for
*Shot six.*
She knew what you wanted for the closer. She stepped in tight to the lens, dropped her chin, looked up through her bangs with the grin at maximum wattage, and brought both hands to her own chest, and squeezed her pecs together.
She did it slowly. Her palms landed on the outer slopes and pressed inward, and the slabs obeyed her the way they obey no one else, gathering, deepening, the central crevasse closing over the buried middle of the gold top and the last of the shadow until her chest was one continuous wall of crowded, striated, vein-fed pressure shelf, rising so high it brushed her dropped chin. The top, at this point, was cargo. The muscle bulged around her own pressing fingers, swallowing them to the first knuckle, hard slab refusing dainty hand, and she could feel her own pulse through her palms, the whole magnificent front of her throbbing with trapped blood and effort and joy. She held the squeeze, and held the grin, and the last thing the camera heard before the shutter was a tiny metallic tik as one strained gold cup slid a centimeter it could not afford.
She sent it. Then she sat down on the bench, which complained, and hugged the phone to the top of the chest that had just performed, and waited, pounding, for the verdict.
*You:* perfect. every one of them. you're unreal.
*You:* now get home. some things the camera doesn't get to have.
She read it and made a sound in the empty locker room somewhere between a squeal and a groan, and the sound echoed off the powder-blue lockers, and her whole pumped front surged one more grateful half-inch against her own hugging arms, because her body has never once heard your approval without trying to grow into it.
*Her:* omw. not showering. you get the pump AND the shine, that's the deluxe package
*Her:* baby?
*Her:* next time write me a BIGGER session. i had more room tonight. i could feel it. i want to fill the whole camera and i want you to watch me do it.
