"On second though..."
The challenge had sounded easy when Ethan shouted it across the pitch. One-on-one, first to three goals, loser buys smoothies. He'd been watching the pickup games at the community stadium all summer, working up the nerve, and today he'd finally pointed at the blonde girl in the green shorts and called her out.
She'd been stretching near the center circle, ponytail catching the afternoon sun, wire-frame glasses sliding down her nose as she bent to tighten her cleats. From across the field she looked like any other weekend player, maybe a little broad in the shoulders, but the oversized white kit made everyone look bulkier than they were.
Now she was jogging toward him, soccer ball tucked under one arm, and Ethan was starting to revise his earlier assessment.
"One on one huh?" Her voice arrived before she did, light and amused, a small smile tugging at the corner of her mouth. She stopped about ten feet away, tilting her head. The stadium lights hadn't kicked on yet, but the sun was doing plenty on its own, catching every contour of a frame that the kit absolutely was not hiding.
Her arms hung loose at her sides, and Ethan's brain had to do a little recalibration. The sleeves of her shirt were stretched taut around biceps that looked carved from something harder than muscle had any right to be, round, full peaks that pushed the green trim of her sleeves nearly to the shoulder seam. Her forearms were a lattice of cords and veins, the kind of definition you only saw in anatomy textbooks, and that was with her arms completely relaxed. Triceps hung in heavy horseshoes beneath, visible even from the front.
"Sure about that cutie?" She grinned wider, and then, without breaking eye contact, she reached down, caught the hem of her shirt with one hand, and lifted it to her face. She bit down on the bunched fabric, holding it there between her teeth, one hand settling on her hip while the other rested loose at her side. The pose was so casual it made the whole thing worse. She wasn't showing off. She was just… letting him see.
Ethan's name for her, silently: Hannah. He'd heard someone call it from the sideline earlier. And Hannah, apparently, liked to make sure her opponents understood what they were signing up for before things got competitive.
What the lifted shirt revealed was, at first, almost too much to parse as a single thought.
His thinking was that of a runaway train!
Her chest dominated everything. Two enormous square slabs of pec hung off her ribcage with the kind of mass that made the rest of her upper body feel secondary, thick enough that the undersides cast their own shadow down onto the top row of her abs. The line between them was a deep, vertical canyon, running from the notch of her collarbones all the way down to her sternum, so pronounced that the skin on either side bulged outward to meet across it. Each pec was striated with visible fibers running horizontally across the mass, little parallel ridges catching the sun, the kind of detail you only see on people who have spent years making muscle their entire personality. The outer edges of them flared wide, tying into her shoulders in thick bundled cords, and the lower shelf, that sharp, clean crease where pec meets ribcage, was so defined it looked drawn on with a pencil. Her nipples sat high and centered on the mass of each one, dwarfed by the sheer surface area around them.
And every few seconds, without her seeming to notice, they twitched. A small involuntary flex as she shifted her weight, or breathed, or tightened her grip on her own hip. Just a flicker, but each one sent a ripple through the striations, made the crease underneath deepen for half a second, made the whole shelf rise and settle.
Below that, her abs were not abs in the way Ethan understood the word. They were architecture. Eight distinct blocks stacked in two perfect columns, each one thick enough to cast its own shadow, the grooves between them deep enough that he could have lost a coin in any of them. Obliques flared out at her sides in heavy, serrated ridges, tapering down into the waistband of her green shorts where a cluster of smaller muscles, the ones that fan out like fingers across the ribs, rippled every time she breathed. Her stomach was glossy with a faint sheen of sweat from her warm-up, and the definition caught the light in a way that felt almost unfair.
Hannah let the shirt drop from her teeth. The cotton caught briefly on the top shelf of her chest before slowly sliding down into place, the fabric visibly straining to cover everything again.
"It's just, you looked real confident over there," she said, adjusting her glasses with one finger. "Didn't wanna be the one to embarrass you without warning first."
Ethan's mouth was very dry. "I think I... "
"You can still back out." She picked up the ball and tossed it from hand to hand. Her forearms flickered with every catch. "Smoothies are on me if you do. No hard feelings."
Behind her, the green of the pitch stretched out empty, the stadium seats rising in tiers of blue and white against the afternoon sky. A few of the other players had stopped what they were doing to watch.
"…What flavors have you got?" Ethan asked weakly.
Hannah laughed, an actual laugh, bright and pleased, and hooked her arm around his shoulders to steer him off the field. Her bicep pressed against the back of his neck, heavy and warm and slightly damp, and he felt it flex once as she adjusted her grip.
"Strawberry banana's my usual," she said. "C'mon. You made the right call."
