Hello! TruckSim GPS v1.2.0 is now ready to download on Google Play and Apple App Store.

This release includes the most important rework of the underlying navigation subsystem since the app's earliest days. The app is now reading a lot of navigation detail it couldn't access before, and that unlocked a wave of improvements across the whole system. Turn instructions are much more precise and now include per-lane guidance, no more illegal turns!

The routing line looks super smooth everywhere, bridges and underpasses are clearly visible on the map, and we added map backgrounds to the base map, including water and country/state borders 😄

Map backgrounds

We're introducing map backgrounds for the base map and its additive mods.

Mods that work standalone from the base map (like RBR, EAA, Reforma Esterlon, Grand Utopia, etc.) don't have backgrounds yet. Some mods may not fit correctly with the default backgrounds (like TerraMaps' Beyond or Alaska NTTF), so in those cases you can disable the map background in the app settings.

But in most other cases, water and borders are looking amazing:

Navigation technical deep dive

As mentioned in the 1.1.0 release, the focus lately has been on improving the turn directions (which were a bit lacking), so the system is ready to incorporate voice navigation in an upcoming update.

Up until now, the app had been working with limited information on intersections. We've now managed to extract per-lane information, which is far more detailed and let us greatly improve the whole routing logic. Looking at the old data we used to work with, you can probably see why some long-standing issues were happening (like the jaggy routing line, the illegal turn suggestions, and others).

Here are some examples of the raw data the routing was working with, 1.1.2 vs 1.2.0:

Per-lane turn directions

Now that we have per-lane information, we can show exactly which lanes are available at each turn, which paths each lane leads to, and which lane you should be in to follow the suggested route.

Fun detail: the arrows aren't pre-rendered, they're generated on the fly from the real angles at each intersection, so you might catch a few arrows pointing at odd angles that match the real junction exactly 🙂

Fixing illegal turns

Having precise per-lane data also let us resolve some long-standing problems with illegal turns and U-turns, which should be completely gone now:

In previous versions, the routing line used to look jaggy on some straight sections, and would even produce some useless instructions. Now everything feels much more natural:

We're now also parsing road height information, which lets us detect bridges and underpasses and highlight them accordingly:

Real-scale units

Take a look around "More Settings" and you'll find a few new ones, like Distance scaling:

Real-scale makes all distances 1:1, which makes the turn-by-turn distances feel completely real (100 meters actually feels like 100 meters). Give it a try!

What's next?

The focus continues to be voice navigation. This update gets the groundwork ready so we can start working on voice next.

Making the maps downloadable (instead of bundling them all inside the app) is another top priority. Bundling every map mod is what keeps pushing the app size up, and we're getting close to 1GB, which is not acceptable. Downloadable maps will let us add a lot more mods while bringing the size right down.

Multiplayer is also high on the roadmap. Work on it will begin once voice and downloadable maps are done, in a later major update.
