Jaime's wings + a hot take on the christian lore
This is the sequel piece to "Kindling" (see last slide).
"Enlightened"
Fire is life
It's your fight to live
For your right to love.
Cleanse your soul of their wrongdoings,
Burn it all to cinders in your honour.
Spread your wings and fly, be free
enlightened by your anger.
Jo/Satan, when he's not blackened by the sins of humanity, is a light that speaks the truth and sees through lies. Fire is a holy purifying element not unlike water, but one who loves the self more than all else. When this love is fostered in humility, Jo becomes a protector that acts as a balancing agent to Jaime's self-sacrificing nature, by enabling her to reject all that dishonours her.
If Jaime started as my unassuming thought experiment on "love personified," I eventually realized that's also literally The Holy Spirit in Christian terms lol. I've come to the conclusion that, if her self-sacrificing nature prevents her from loving herself, then she needs to accept another energy to survive: fire.
I explained before that Jo's halo and Jaime's broken chest are one and the same. Because Jo (then Satan) becomes exalted through his desire to have her exist, Jaime's pain is literally his halo.
In other words, Jo is the failsafe, the righteous fury that keeps Jaime from dying of self-sacrifice. He is the fire that moves the self to fight for themselves so that they can carry the holy spirit.
Even though A Witch's Cross is a product of my personal journey, it is still written with some background research into different religions, including various sects and facets of Christianity. I was mostly trying to stay sane while in a lot of pain, but I was very interested to find that fire is a actually a recurring holy/purifying element. It's commonly known Bible lore that Christ gained his New body through both baptism (water) and chrismation (fire, symbolized by heated oils). I believe this was meant to signify fire and water in both spiritual dispositions as well as purifying elements, and in joining the two in harmony, the anointed one could carry the holy spirit within them.
Anyway, that's Jo and Jaime... I didn't know that's what they were, but that's how they turned out. I think it makes sense why they belong together.
