From the late '60s to the mid '70s the Who were the best live rock band in the world. It wasn't until Moon's substance abuse issues started to get the better of him that they kind of came back to earth. The Who were one of the most unique bands out there. The lead instruments were really the bass and drums, with Pete having to hold the whole thing together with his guitar. The "Live At Leeds" album is one of the best live rock albums ever released. When they were "on", the band's energy could be scary. Of course, Pete was/is a great songwriter, so that helped as well...
In the early days the WHO were very radical and carefree, obviously a bit rebellious, with the energy of youth on their side. I saw them four times back in the early 80's, after Keith had passed, they weren't as crazy then, more mature, but still put on great shows... And yes, John was always the solid base of the band, a very great bass player indeed!!! #THG
