Turning 26 Hectares Into an Off-Grid Farm (Clearing the Land)

It's time to get to work on our wild block of land in Vanuatu and start the next big step… clearing it.

Before we can even think about where the house might go, we’ve got A LOT to learn lol. This week Riles and I are getting familiar with the tractor, figuring out what we’re doing (or at least trying to), and transforming this overgrown piece of jungle into something we can one day call home.

Get ready for a bunch of laughs, one heck of a steep learning curve and the occasional reminder that neither of us has done anything like this before ( just like when we started sailing all those years ago 😅 ).

Riles and I are slowly making progress I reckon, but tips and tricks are always welcome!!!

We hope you enjoy this early, ad free preview of next week's episode. None of it would be possible without your support.

Hey Guys, just saw the clearing episode, you've got the right idea, keep at it. I started my farming journey a couple of years ago at age 60, after a career in construction. I planted and am growing 400 avocados (with some citrus and stone fruit) and my wife raises horses in socal just east of San Diego. You're on the right track with Kubota as they are (at least were) the ONLY manufacturer to make and use all of their own OEM parts. Even Deere outsources a lot of their stuff and the suppliers change year to year which can create havoc with repairs. I run a 6060 HSTC (60 hp - hydraulic drive with the cab) for 20 acres. Its plenty of rig, but small enough to get around stuff. The one on the show is probably 2 sizes bigger. The hydraulic drive is a great operator feature (no clutch) without giving up performance. Get the quick release bucket with hydros plumbed up front and rear quick release with top and tilt for attachments (grapple, gannon box w rippers, land rake, forks, mower etc) This size will not disappoint during construction and will do the maintaining just fine once you're done. Rent a mid-size mini excavator (not too mini) for the road and house foundations. I own a mini X also, (7500 pound class) and have built my home and cut in all my access roads using both machines. You're gonna want a utility cart also, we run 2 electrics now and will get the Kubota next season when we start to harvest as it can hold the weight of the harvest boxes and get almost anywhere. Hope this helps, reach out if you need anything, CHEERS!!!!

We've been watching since the beginning. I think you were on episode 4 or 5 when we came along. It's not so much about the sailing anymore for us. We've watched the relationship blossom, the boat ideas come and go, the children come along. We're gonna keep watching of course, its like we know you even though you don't know us. Far better than any scripted reality show. It was SO cute to see Elayna all nervous in the last episode. This gal's done just about everything on camera that would terrify the average person and makes it look easy. Along comes a proposal. Super tender moments. Thank you for sharing your ups and downs with us all.

ps, maybe a small village at the bottom of the hill where the Banna boys (and their extended families no doubt) can live when they are on your island. And you'll need a gang to keep the bush down... and maybe crew... might be a navigator amongst them. living my dream you guys, thank you.

You'r clearing mostly invasive species that are infesting Vanuatu these days. Your endeavours are to be applauded. You have an awesome place there and I am so happy you found it. I'm excited to see where we go. But laminated glass and storm shutters for the reading room please.

There will always be negative people, Riles. Those of us who've followed y'all from two marans ago, know what great stewards you are of the ocean and that can only translate to proper stewardship of Mother Earth. As far as a tractor, and since you're going to be building a road, think about a used loader/excavator with a PTO for the bush hog. You're going to be digging into that limestone Elay mentioned, and will need more than that bucket. Once the road's finished, you can sell it and downsize. Used heavy equipment is in high demand. Odds are, you'll get what you paid for it and only be out the shipping.

Hey guys, thanks for fun vid. You know that saying Riley always said, "I think I need a bigger boat", now it is going to be "I think I need a bigger tractor, chainsaw, truck and eventually overalls". LOL :) Cheers... Vlad

I have an idea, it could save money as well; I wouldn’t suggest this, but for the fact you live on a sal boat with children. 1). Either rent (depending upon cost) or buy a two bedroom trailer to live in. A). You wil need electric a) either generator or permanent power by whom ever supplies on the island b) potable water supply 1. Assume dig a well with purification or public drinking water supplied by public utility (if available) B) sewerage disposal 1). Septic tanks and drainage field; Recmaition system that you design for grey and black water disposal I have 50 plus years as a Plumbing, HVAC, and utilities contractor and General contractor. Ah this is so much fun to watch you get stuck into it all! The clearing taking shape, the boys in their gum boots, the kitties, the waterfall coming into view, the lads (I hope you can help them sort out all the documents they need) and THE TRACTOR! Congrats Riley, they ARE fun to drive aren't they?
