Our Damaged Trimaran... (Can We Sail To JAPAN!?)

Just as excitement ramps up for sailing to Japan, our plans have come to a staggering halt. 😔

This week, we fly back to Subic Bay (after having spent a beautiful month with our family is Aussie), where we reconnected with Jai. Jai is an absolute legend and the man we've entrusted with touching up & looking after La Vagabonde III while we've been away.

Unfortunately, Jai has encountered a serious problem with our baby... specifically, a gigantic crack in the structural part of the centreboard case.

So join us for a week of intense and stressful problem solving, as our departure date to set sail for Japan edges closer and closer.

We hope you enjoy this early preview of this week's episode. As always, thank you so much for your support - we simply couldn't make these types of episodes without you!

PS: If you've read this far, let us know what you think we should do in the comments below.

Love,

Elayna, Riley, Lenny & Darwin

As another cute old guy I have been watching you on your Patreon for I don't know how many years now. But yes, Riley. I did need Elayna to tell me how to "subscribe". LOL. Good luck with everything and lots of love right back atya! Cheers!

Greetings from one of your OLD PEOPLE! This episode made me sick! I was remembering all the research you had done before embarking on getting to the decision on who would build your boat and make it possible for your dreams to be realized.. and now you are finding there are such serious faults in the build or materials used to build your boat. I pray that these serious structural issues can be remedied to your satisfaction.

Lenny, I think the bat tree is the happiest tree. Big 'ole happy fruit bats, eating the tastiest fruit chose that tree to sleep in. I think that tree is also happy that you are there to wonder about it. Best of luck with the sail to Japan!

Keep crackalackin'! Gotta say, my heart sank at the issues that have popped up. I hope it can be fixed better than ever!

This doesn’t look to be a matter of slapping some cloth and epoxy on and calling it good unfortunately. Rapido should provide a substitute boat while they do a proper fix consulting with M&M. If they won’t send the right people maybe you call Seth Hynes at HH as they have a factory in the Philippines. Perhaps the idea of HH stepping in lites a fire under Rapido’s arse, or Rapido can work with them. They know composites.

Ed Campaniello · August 17, 2024

That is such a load center and it’s structural. Yikes.

Hi Elenya, I was about to sign up my grandkids for IXL to get some Maths tutoring for them. The I remembered you saying Ellie was using it with Lenny. I wonder if she is happy about it enough to give it a promo. I'd be happy to wait for you to give it a plug if you think it is worth it. BTW did you look at the new AI based program from Khan Academy called Karmingo? I can't get it here in Aus but you guys would get access via your satellite connection to the Americanised version. The Khan stuff was good.

Lenny is too cute. I hope LVIII gets CPR and is ready for a trip to Japan. 😄⛵️

Scary, especially considering you have family relying on the boat's structural integrity and durability.😬

Yes, we DO care about you and your "little family"! I always look at delays like this in gratitude for the possibility that it has kept something worse from happening down the road...in this case on the major trip to Japan. Timing is everything and we usually don't really have a clue what will happen even as we do our best to control situations. Keep those spirits up - you all are awesome!

I bought a FP catamaran in 2021, I've had similar issues, one after another. Many are related to adhesives/bonding agents/gelcoats - I heard about a new Lagoon where the deck separated from the hull. Glue seems to have lost its mojo.Do the quality control test the stuff before they apply it?

Wayne Stinnett · August 16, 2024

Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast, Riles. Just relax, exhale, take the boys for a swim, and come back to it. You beat a cracked spine, a cracked daggerboard case ain't that bad.

One way or another, it will be cool. Hang in there, Friends.

Esmeree Skye · August 16, 2024

Yikes Riley you really were graceful about your reticence to trust the Rapido guys but I can't get over how truly disrespectful it is for Rapido to not treat this as a dire situation! I mean, your kids live on this boat with you! You're a whole family on this thing, I should hope they would consider both your lives and their reputation and get the best guys to properly fix this. Good luck, guys, rooting for you and patiently awaiting updates! Stay cool. We'll all be here.

Seems as though Rapido has really screwed the pooch on this vessel. Is it design, build quality or both. Still could have been a terrible failure out on the water with injuries or worse.

M
Mark Tauscher · August 16, 2024

Rapido has screwed up big time. The design is bad, The manufacturing is bad. The repair is bad. The response by the company is bad Why would anyone buy a boat from them at this point in time If they don’t respond in an aggressive manner and doing everything above and beyond to get this fixed correctly then they are done as a boat company.

D
David Cooper · August 16, 2024

Agree completely. This is a very expensive NEW boat. None of this should be happening!

C
Colleen Balch · August 16, 2024

Hey, you already know what to do. Take care of the family first, boat second, have the patience to wait it out and be certain the boat is sound. If worse comes to worse, you can drum up a delivery team that with Riley, can sail hard between storms while Elay and the kids jump ahead to Okinawa and meet up there. If you go a week or two without a movie, we’ll all still be here when you’re ready to post up another one. Just let us know on IG so we don’t worry! ;) And it looks like you’re under way, northwest of Subic Bay and headed North, so fingers crossed, it’s sorted!

I have noticed, since the beginning, when you two focus on something and work on it together...you overcome any and all situations! This is a BIG one and you are both showing the calmness and determination required.

S
Spencer Norby · August 16, 2024

I believe you have hit that most delicate point in dealing with Rapido. What I gather from what has been said so far in the video, there has now been two tries with the same materials and same workers. I believe you are now in the danger range of perhaps getting an "almost right" job done and having that fail under load at sea. Rapid should now send their top team and prioritize this above all things their company is working on. It will be a delicate dance with Rapido if you have to push them for fear of really damaging their reputation. There should also be a full survey of the performance of all quantities of laminating materials from the same lots or batches. So far, same materials and same workers in these repairs are running a 100% failure rate. Rapido and the materials suppliers and manufacturers should all be sweating bullets for fear of a very public failure of their construction/materials/workmanship. The same materials in the same places have now failed three times. And.... they still have not sent their top person(s) to make sure it has been done right. The resin manufacturer(s) should also be sending their top chemist to test the batch to make sure there hasn't been a misformulation. Hey... it's either a bad formulation of the resin. Impurities in the catalyst, mishandling in shipment, errors in the mixing on site, or even some environmental condition such as humidity common to bother ship and present work site. You know better than most all sailors, a three-fold failure in the construction/repair of your boat is itself a threat to your family's safety. I wish you and crew safety and good travels. I worry for you all. Spencer Norby, Vin Vitae Tacoma, Washington,USA

Excellent analysis here. Rapido absolutely MUST make this good or they are sunk.

On a lighter note away from boat troubles Elayna's hot thongs comment made me laugh. Thongs in uk mainly refer to ladies skimpy underwear instead of flip flops!

Fascinating - and worrying - video! Good luck with it all. How can Jai be only 23?! (I’m nervous of putting this in print - but what’s your plan if there’s an earthquake in Japan? Current talk of it in the news). All best wishes x

D
David Cooper · August 16, 2024

This structural damage is totally unsettling to those of us who have come to care about your family and sailing friends. Can any repair solve these stress fracture issues permanently? Seems like the engineering, and/or construction are flawed, as this damage has occurred so early in the boat's life-cycle, and without any identifiable overt cause. Glad you are apparently taking this in stride. I'd be totally demoralized...

S
Samantha Hauser · August 16, 2024

I think what is so important about this video is you showing the lows as well. Kudos for sharing all of this because it is not easy owning a boat and juggling all that you guys do. Simply impressive.

Paulo and Silvia Gouveia · August 16, 2024

Sorry to hear about the troubles. You are doing great keeping your cool. No confidence at all in these repairs. How can they guarantee it won’t crack again. What kind of re-enforcement will they be doing? Geee… so many questions! Good luck guys!

S
Spencer Norby · August 16, 2024

Since the lamination is remaining rubbery instead of becoming hard, the error is most likely in the formulation of materials either in manufacturing or application.

D
Derrick Gould · August 16, 2024

Legendary patience guys. Good on ya. …but seriously frustrating to find such major issues so soon after launch. Good on Jai tho for finding the issues now rather than finding out half way across the passage. Fair winds and following seas. (Especially on passage)

Steve Maller · August 16, 2024

I don't know a lot about carbon fiber or anything about boats, but I am deeply worried that there is a structural flaw in this boat. I mean, the amount of force that those huge sails place at the point of contact is huge. I really hope a few patches can address it, but that doesn't feel like an engineered fix. Holding you guys in my thoughts!

E
Eloise Twilight · August 16, 2024

OMG - SO worrying from an audience perspective. The cure was obviously not right but I hope that is all resolved before even attempting the big crack fix. Geez what does Rapido say - extend that warranty!! Be safe ~ love this extended family . . . Love the fact the boys want to live/sleep on the boat! 🦖🦖🦖🦖

Lisha Taylor · August 16, 2024

Sorry to hear about the cracks but seems you’re on it and I have every confidence you’ll get it fixed safely! How many cc’s is that bike ? And pleeease wear appropriate foot gear, I had a Harley Iron until I decided I needed to be a sensible grandma and stick around for my grandchildren … but still miss riding 🙏🏻

Always happy to see a new video hit the notifications. OLD People, I resemble that remark. I tried to download SeaPeople a couple weeks ago and had trouble, must be my "old" mind. I will try again today. Love you guys. (heart, heart)

Oh no! Yeah Riley can he do it yes he can! Why because your the love boat Captain.🤣 https://open.spotify.com/track/7GRI5gcEQjqtbGPEq0cUz4?si=COr3kpoNQM2TekV7dlR3vw Do you know this song? My favourite at the moment. Thanks Regards Lee Pottle Is this just another day? This God forgotten place First comes love and then comes pain Let the games begin Questions rise and answers fall Insurmountable Love boat captain Take the reigns and steer us towards the clear, here It's already been sung, but it can't be said enough All you need is love Is this just another phase? Of earthquakes making waves Trying to shake the cancer off? Oh, stupid human beings Once you hold the hand of love It's all surmountable Hold me and make it the truth That when all is lost, there'll be you 'Cause to the universe, I don't mean a thing And there's just one word I still believe And it's love It's an art to live with pain Mix the light into grey Lost nine friends we'll never know Two years ago today And if our lives became too long Would it add to our regret? And the young, they can lose hope 'Cause they can't see beyond today The wisdom that the old can't give away, hey Constant recoil Sometimes life don't leave you alone Hold me and make it the truth That when all is lost, there will be you 'Cause to the universe, I don't mean a thing And there's just one word that I still believe And it's love, love, love, love, love Love boat captain, take the reigns Steer us towards the clear I know it's already been sung Can't be said enough Love is all you need All you need Is love Love, love, love, love, love…..❤️❤️❤️

How frustrating it must be to spend that much money on the boat and have it have structural damage.
