Dev Log #52 - Combat UI

Hey folks, lets talk about the combat user interface rework!

We've put back this rework for way too long and we finally took the time to tackle it. There is still some tuning needed, but here is what we got so far:

First, we replaced the old limbs bars under the characters with a doll representing each limb, so it's much more clear which bar represent which limb:

Here is what the old characters UI looks like:

As you may have noticed, we removed the action points number and moved it to the HUD at the bottom, as a red bar replacing the old HP bar which was redundant.

With the goal of making the cost of your next actions much more clear:

The stamina bar (yellow) is still present but redesigned. This is the old version for comparison:

Next we reworked the skills buttons into fully animated cards, to make their use a lot more satisfying:

The AP and Stamina bars preview how many points will be consumed by that skill or item, and the required resources are also displayed directly on the cards themselves. The red gem is the AP, the yellow one is the stamina and of course the blue hourglass top right represents the skill cooldown, if any.

The green gem at the bottom of the gears represent the number of items left in the inventory.

The skills can now be reordered with a simple drag and drop. The only limit to this is gears cannot be mixed with skills, they will always stay on their own side.

Character swap animation:

Another nice little feature is the ability to dismiss a skill tooltip for good, since they aren't useful anymore once you know it does. The tooltip can be displayed again by using the "?" bottom right:

Finally we added an history of the cards played by the enemy:

Anyway that's it for this devlog. We have many more things coming for Gold & Sand and Avarice, but we can't spoil those here!

Cool changes. Though in my opinion the old interface that shows the hp and defense of the limbs was better. It just fitted more into the ui. The new one just feels odd. How about you make it possible to change between the two in the settings?

When I fought these worms, I was simply unable to do any damage to them that they couldn't heal faster. Perhaps a skill issue, but one that made me very happy that you have a "Skip Combat" option. But obviously, the fact that you have that option means you realize the problems with your combat system. I LOVE these stories, to be clear; I would be a very happy customer if you released, like, "Visual Novel" editions of both Avarice and Gold&Sand.

I am normally skeptical of reworking functional aspects of a game, but this UI seems significantly better.
