For those curious about the OFAH Copyright situation on YouTube

Hey guys, Stephen here, Let's get frustrated!

here’s the short version of the absolute copyright circus we’ve been dealing with.

The original OFAH upload received a scheduled copyright takedown and was supposed to be removed on September 11. That never happened. Instead, YouTube Support later told us the takedown request may have been incomplete and that YouTube was waiting for additional information from the claimant. 14th YouTube Support

Since then, the “countdown” has basically stopped behaving like a countdown. It went from 3 days remaining, to 9 days, then 10, then 11, and now it says 13 days until removal while still telling us the video should have been deleted before September 11. YouTube Support actually told us to contact them again if the timer changed, and when it did, they escalated the issue to an internal team for review. Here’s the weirdest part: we re-uploaded the OFAH reaction, BBC Studios claimed the new upload… and then released the claim.

So right now we have a new version that BBC has released, while the old version is still stuck in this bizarre pending-takedown limbo.

We’re being cautious because we really don’t want to risk a copyright strike on the channel just for the sake of rushing the upload out. We know it’s frustrating, trust us, it’s frustrating the hell out of us too, but we’d rather wait a little longer and protect the channel than make a bad move that causes bigger problems.

The good news is that things are moving in a much better direction now, and we’re hoping we can finally get this OFAH reaction out to you properly very soon.

Thanks for being patient with us while YouTube and copyright law continue their ongoing mission to make our lives as confusing as humanly possible.

The especially frustrating part is that we actually needed the original video to be taken down and the copyright strike to be applied before we could use YouTube’s counter-notification process. That counter-notification is the legal process we can use to challenge the removal and potentially have the video reinstated.

YouTube Support confirmed that while the video is still sitting in this “scheduled for removal” state, we cannot submit the counter-notification yet. We have to wait for the takedown to actually happen first. 14th YouTube Support

So every time the removal countdown gets pushed farther into the future, it also pushes back our ability to challenge the takedown and start the process of getting the video released. That’s why the timer going from 3 days, to 9, to 10, to 11, and now 13 days has been such a problem, we’ve essentially been stuck in copyright limbo. Now that we got back OFAH, I'll be pursuing Fawlty Towers next.

Hope you enjoyed the long rant about our Copyright woes.

How come you got time to remove it before you got a copyright strike yet whenever one of my reactions has attracted copyright it’s either a block or recently when I uploaded my reaction to S1 E1 of Ted it was an immediate copyright strike?? It really is true, they DO favour YouTubers with bigger channels. 🤦🏻‍♂️

The BBC are being particularly annoying at the moment. They’ve just removed/deleted a whole load of Mitchell and Webb sketches from existence as apparently they don’t fit in with modern attitudes! (Like the BBC do!)

I’ve seen it happen to other channels too and it’s so silly as it promotes such joy to fans of a show and probably drives more views again. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a bbc person who joins all the patreons and Yt channels just to strike them down. Same with Avalon - I posted on Reddit that I had a spare ticket for taskmaster and got a dm from someone saying it was against the rules then got a direct email from taskmaster minutes later, was clearly the same person. Patreon seems to be a safer space.

BBC are on their last legs and looking to save money - they could save a few quid by stop wasting their time going after people on YT. Big, slow moving old companies like this never learn, reminds me of Nintendo.

As much as i am not a fan of the BBC, how much publicity is this show getting at this point? They should be happy people are still talking about it.

I always assume it's more down to marketing people having their job done for em 😅

What a frustrating mess. Will this affect future Only Fools and Horses episodes being uploaded on Patreon every Monday, or is it a YouTube-only issue?

Won't be long until the UK will have to pay the BBC a licence fee to watch YouTube. Nothing ever easy when you're dealing with the Big Bas**rd Cooperation

They're currently floating the idea of scrapping the LF and replacing it with a broadband tax to fund the beeb.

So many people need to see this. Sick af of the comments you see on various YT channels of "bUt OThEr cHaNneLS mAnAGE iT". The rules are enforced in such an unfair and arbitrary way. "Oh it must be a huuuge channel that YT allows it through". Nope, there's fuck all logic to it. It's not just YT either, I got a copyright strike on my soundcloud account for uploading a guitar cover of a tune, because I had the original song in the background. If someone is gonna rip and listen to my shitey-guitar-playing-over-the-top-of-the-original-song version to mp3, they were never buying your song/album anyway 🙄 backwards af

You guys please take all the time you need. Im sure I can speak for everyone when I say we don't need you to get copyright struck either with no good reason!! The BBC act in a very strange way sometimes but maybe its getting them more referrals to their site as well, who knows.... Anyways I do hope to see you complete the show as it is worth every single minute of watch time 😀🙌
