A Few Changes on YouTube

Dear Patrons,

Quick informational update regarding a few upcoming changes to the YouTube versions of our episodes. Nothing changes here on Patreon - everything stays exactly as it is. But some of you may eventually watch an episode on YouTube and realize it’s slightly different from the version uploaded here.

These decisions came after a long strategy meeting with our YouTube network, which carefully analyzed what performs on YouTube and what completely dies there. Because of that, we now need to separate the YouTube videos from the Patreon show. Patreon remains the full experience we’ve always wanted to create.

The changes on YouTube:

  • No more opening skits. You can already see it in the latest episode (The Worst Reviewed Hotel in England). On YouTube, you won’t find the skit where Peter gets a trip to California for his birthday from his two idiotic cameramen.

  • Much shorter “Googling” and review sections. The dopamine-deprived youth (who unfortunately make up the majority of YouTube demand) want to get to the hotel/restaurant as fast as possible. So we have to get them there quickly. They don’t care about background easter eggs or extra information about the worst-reviewed establishment.

  • No more music videos. Everybody skips them on YouTube, and we always get copyright strikes for them anyway, despite the fact that both the music and lyrics are entirely created by us.

  • No more outros with final ratings. For most viewers, leaving the hotel/restaurant is the signal to close the video.

Once again, the ‘wholesome’ episodes you know from Patreon (with opening skits, easter eggs, music videos, intros and outros) are not changing here at all. But since the show is currently in survival mode, we need to adapt to the market on YouTube.

Thanks for sharing the links to the YT videos here. Watching on the Patreon app sucks. I'm a traveler too doing the Airbnb thing. Love all of the content. It’s art 💯

Had a few tight months, but back now on team Stanhope! Some times life just kicks you in the nads.

Still watch on both platforms for maximum support.

“The dopamine-deprived youth” I have to disagree with this, even if an update was posted to explain that it referred to single time viewers. First because it's incredibly condescending. Second because I am 50 and feel that the comments cited here are actually right. (edit: third, because it's ignoring that the long time followers are not big fans of those either, they're just more invested) I've been an early follower and I'm a Patreon. I see that there has been a lot of efforts to make the various skits as qualitative as possible. Yet, I feel that they are falling flat. Even, I am skipping them. They feel forced, overdone somehow. It's hard to pinpoint exactly. And this Patreon is pretty expensive. I like the videos but I'm not sure that they're worth all the money that I'm putting in. I don't want Pppeter to be over, so I'm keeping it but I'm on the edge here.

Just save the episodes on YT to watch later. Works great.

I caught myself slipping into the "dopamine-deprived youth" section myself. I started forcing myself to watch full-length videos again, instead of skipping half of it, to train myself to get "back to normal". It is a legitimate issue for society.

Just a quick reaction to the guy who deleted his comment (we were on a filming set, so didn’t have time to properly react). He got angry that we used the words ‘dopamine-deprived youth’ and he thought this incredibly derogatory term described our audience. The truth is the exact opposite - it’s the unique viewers that have never seen our content that mostly drive the algorithm and push the video forward - our retention curves show that these people skip the parts we care about the most and they want to be taken directly to the hotel/restaurant. It’s the dopamine deprived youth.

I don’t want to be rude or critical, but everyone gets feedback at their job. Me, every construction worker, every chef. Everybody. When the food is not good, the chef gets feedback. But as much as I love Peter’s personality, he just cannot take any criticism. Any negative feedback. My honest opinion, and I say this as someone who loves Peter, is that people are skipping the beginning where you go through the reviews because it’s still the same thing every time, nothing interesting and, unfortunately, not even funny. Even the “funny drunk guys” in the background are just not funny anymore. That’s why people are skipping. We are not necessarily dopamine-deprived kids. I am 30, and I just don’t need to see the beginning of the episode because I don’t find it funny. I like real, situational humor that happens naturally in the moment, not scripted, repetitive scenes that are in every single episode. I think what you are explaining in the post actually means that your viewers want to see Peter in real-life situations, not scripted scenes, not unnecessary music videos (which are amazing, and I know there is so much work behind them). I would still rather see the real Peter making silly jokes than this. I don’t need to see the ending with the confrontation because it is almost always the same. This is written with all due respect to Peter and his team. I will never skip a video entirely, but I just don’t enjoy it as much anymore.

Absolutely second this. There is room for improvement, especially on the points you mentioned. I love the creator, the videos just need more polishing for a broader audience.

Fully understand. YT algo is tricky, so som changes has to be tried out. And this sounds like a good way to do it. 😊

“The dopamine-deprived youth” 👌 Will there still be a full length YouTube link for new Patreon posts? I do prefer YouTube to the Patreon video player

To me the intros/outros/music are the funniest parts of the videos. Glad you are keeping them here.
