(Australian Grand Prix Support Race Category)
New Extension of ATCC and Bathurst Easter Weekend
Pre 1956 Racing
Easter, April 14th 1952, Bathurst NSW. The Jaguar XK120s of Jack Robinson (chassis #660178) and John Boorman (chassis #660114) in a support race for the Australian Grand Prix.
Event 3 was the 6 lap Ferodo Handicap for Production Closed and Open Cars. The 120s started the handicap race off scratch (0.00 seconds). Jack Robinson finished 4th with Bill Buckle winning in a Citroen (30 mins 25 secs), C. Kane was second in a Simca and David McKay was third in a MG TC. John Boorman was tenth. Jack had the fastest race time (20 mins 29 secs) and fastest lap (3 minutes 23 secs) while John Boorman's best lap was 10 seconds behind Jack's.
Jack was clocked at 119.02 mph, the third fastest top speed of the day, only beaten by Stan Jones in the Maybach at 141.82 mph and Doug Whiteford in the Lago Talbot at 138.51 mph who were both in the AGP event. John Boorman was timed at 116.9 mph, the sixth fastest top speed for the day with the two XK120s that were in the AGP also beating him.
Though it was titled as a production car race, entrants could modify their engines as long as they declared it and that they used the 'pool' petrol as supplied by the promoters. As Australian Motor Sports magazine in their May 1952 issue said "All of which makes racing more interesting, but hardly makes a production car race". Cummins Archive
