Was really hopping that it landed on Dave😭
When are we doing 2014 fhd please
You should put Joey's Bada$$ ''1999'' on the wheel or do an Introduction to him, It's the Gen X's Illmatic and his early work is reminiscent of 90s NY rappers like Nas and Method Man
this has too few likes for what it's covering lol, I bet a lot of people unfortunately blindly skip these 😭
PAC was like Jesus, Nas wrote the bible 🔥🔥
The timing is always serendipitous, its destiny lol cant wait for Born Sinner!! Also you'll notice Illmatic has amazing replay value. Always fun to listen to
I can't wait for the day you hit Black on Both Sides! So many tracks on there that will blow your mind
So far the wheel has made two fantastic choices Thinking about her comment on learning lingo makes me wonder how long it would take for her to get through Uptown Saturday Night by Camp Lo. I mean this is just the 2nd verse of the first song lmao "Gifted Caramela, cinderella hold a fella tight Make the octopussy do the watusi for the night Call me by first name - Cheeba, sip the tang divas In my sinasex, get the intersect, it's the kid But she make me wanna holla pass a dollar wit glass Sookie, sookie for the nookie, meditatin' on that ass Doctor feel good, but it feel good when I splash Get me high make me eat the hunky pie, Seaworld" But man the vibe is immaculate
That was almost really funny... Psychodrama was right there lol
It's a boring opinion but I do think this is the GOAT hip hop album. The rhyming, the poetry, the production, the album sequencing is all perfect. Even One Time For Your Mind, the weakest song on the album, is just a really good hip hop track. Q-Tip is the lead vocalist from A Tribe Called Quest, a New York hip hop group that was very popular from the late 1980s to the mid 1990s and helped pioneer jazz-rap as a subgenre. Getting Q-Tip as a feature was a big deal for Nas, who otherwise just had AZ (nobody knew AZ before this, and his insane verse on Life's a Bitch launched his own solo career). But Nas got all of the best producers in New York on this - DJ Premier (Preemo), Pete Rock, Large Professor, Q-Tip - and you can tell.
I like Born Sinner more 🤣
Love this journey of hip hop history I see Rakim is on the wheel. Rakim changed the game with how lyrical hip hop could be, Nas took that blueprint but elevated it to a whole new level. It’s also the first hip hop album to have a team of producers. Before Illmatic, it was common to have the same producer on every track Speaking on producers.. it’s interesting seeing Donuts on the wheel. It’s mostly an instrumental album with vocal samples, so I’m curious to see how you react to it
Having the whole album produced by the same person or group of people was the standard before, but Illmatic was definitely not the first album to have beats from different producers. What was notable is that he had a selection of the absolute elite of NY producers on his debut album.
AZ is truly the best feature artist. I always love his songs on nas' albums, but this one is truly peak. "Visualizin' the realism of life in actuality Fuck who's the baddest, a person's status depends on salary". Also just a note, its A Z the 2 letters not Az like a name.
Also you're doing it Vambie! You're picking up rhyme SCHEMEs!
I feel like vambie would really benefit from listening to ebonics by Big L. It gives a really good base for the 90s slang. Even though it doesnt cover everything and wutang/5% philosophy build up the lexicon throughout the 90s
The MJ sample in the last track is so genius
The only way he could use the sample is if Nas didn’t curse. So there’s not one cuss word in the whole song
The Bahhhhh 🐐🐐🐐
Big Krit - 4eva is a mighty long time Rapsody- Laila’s Wisdom Nipsey Hussle- Victory Lap Lupe Fiasco- Drill Music in Zion / Samurai Nas- king’s Disease trilogy/ magic trilogy Common- Be / Finding Forever / The auditorium vol 1
I think for now there's enough on the wheel, it'll take a couple years at least to get through everything on there. She might add more when she particularly likes an artist she discovers through the "introduction to" series though. And Common's Be should be on there, if not then she put it on the backburner list she mentioned.
Also kinda crazy you ain’t pick up on the Michael Jackson sample on It Ain’t Hard To Tell lmao
Olu Dara is Nas's father, he plays the trumpet at the end of Life's a Bitch
apologies for any confusion this was definitely not supposed to go live until the 10th patreon is really messing with me by not saving the updated schedule post time 🤦🏻♀️
A curse be upon the Patreon gods for giving us this a few days early. Steak too juicy, lobster too buttery, etc. (I get your frustration though😅)
Also yes the album cover shows him and the Queensbridge Houses, a big housing project that is home to an insane number of hip hop greats, I don't think there's a neighbourhood in the world that has produced as many hip hop legends. It was even namesake of one of the first hip hop beefs, the Bridge Wars.
Vambie already rapping along to "I never sleep, cause sleep is the cousin of death" on the second (?) listen. You passed the test. You're a real hip hop head now. 😹
The opening dialogue and music are from the 1982 movie Wild Style, the first movie about hip hop culture.
let's goooooooo
You’re correct Nas was 16-19 when he made this and was crowned a genius/ prodigy before he even released any of the singles from this simply because of freestyles at open mics. This also made virtually every major producer want to work on this album which was the first time that happened. One of the earliest examples of a rap album being absurdly hyped pre release (also thanks to bootlegs/ leaks lol) and one of the few “instant” classics. Regarded by many as the best rap album ever
This album here is considered the Hip Hop Bible. It was this moment when not only I fell in love with Nas but with the whole art form of Hip Hop. U had to see me listening to this album when I was 16 and my mind was just blown.
Crazy goat pull, this should be fun
WAIT. My GOAT Syncer is a Vambino fan too?? DeadlockVambie fam rise up 😤
Woah 😳 we got Nas the goat 🐐
