Any word on Smissmas?

TF2: Will there ever be an update for MvM (Mann Up mode)? New maps, etc? MvM was updated for the Pyro update and the gas passer, but this minor level of tweaking is not what I'm asking about.

When did Half-life episode 3 or Half-life 3 become vaporware? And why? My guess is around 2010, I think that was when it appeared episode 3 was becoming HL3. I could be really wrong on that. Basically what I'm asking is do we know when Valve realized the next HL game was off the release calendar? And what was the greatest hindrance to its release, Valve's management style, the video game market, Steam/CS/DoTA success, VR?
