Years ago, Reta was deeply in love with her childhood sweetheart, the one person she genuinely believed she'd grow old with. They were inseparable, and for the first time, Reta allowed herself to fully trust someone with her heart. They built a life together and had plans for a future that seemed almost certain, until tragedy took her away far too soon.

Her death left Reta in shambles. She lost the will to carry on for a while, and no matter the amount of support she had from her family or friends, life seemed bleak without her. The worst part wasn't mourning her lover but also having to mourn what she took with her: the future they'd spent years imagining with each other. It took Reta years to learn how to laugh again, go out, make friends, and enjoy the little things in life, but romance was different. The idea of giving someone that much of herself again became terrifying and almost revolting. It would be like she was trying to replace her, and she couldn't fathom the thought of anyone coming that close ever again.

Now, Reta is perfectly happy being the life of the party and making memories with the people she loves. She'll flirt, she'll joke, and she'll happily dance the night away, but try to get close to her, and she'll disappear. Reta saw herself as a summer night's breeze, cool and brief; others just find it hard to let her go.

She knows that love can be beautiful, but she's already experienced what it feels like when that love is suddenly taken away.
