well Mara wound up being happier with the Tau than she would have been with the guard, if only by virtue of getting more and better food and a nicer boss, so it all worked out for the best.
Indeed it's for the best that she doesn't know, it would've made it harder to convince her to defect.
A great man once said that Commissars who mistreat their troops are more likely to die from stray las fire. Or something, I dunno. I've only read one Ciaphas Cain book so far xD
