timbuktu unit!

happy black history month!

last year, researching my family genealogy, curious about how far i could go back, like so many african americans, my research only took me back to the early 1900s. out of curiosity i purchased an upgraded ancestry account and found through my maternal grandfather that his 2nd great grandparents Hanry and Edith Harris, were both born in Africa, Timbuktu Mali for Hanry and Guinea for Edith. the discovery shocked me and my loved ones to the core, especially with me planning to do a release inspired by the play Timbuktu by Eartha Kitt, an image i found on Pinterest just a month before. more shock set in when i found that their child Phyllis lived not only in the same part of town i lived in, but across the street from the park i frequented all of my childhood, Emancipation Park in 3rd Ward, Houston Texas. i wonder how often we took the same steps, had the same thoughts, i wonder if she dreamed of me. i hope i make them proud.

for this render i wanted to show my deep love not only for african culture but also for houston. i used gold as the main color since it was one of the main exports from Timbuktu during that time. the umbrella im holding is inspired by the Timbuktu play art cover, but also to display my creole heritage from my maternal grandmother i mentioned in the Oh Louisiana render. for Guinean culture, sadly my 5th great grandmothers city was not mentioned so i went with a very basic laali henna on the fingers, eyeliner for Solange and swangas rims of course to show 3rd Ward culture. lastly the black green and red background for the Pan African flag.
