Goes live tomorrow unless it's broken.

As with all of your videos, this has proved infinitely rewatchable. I am enjoying the e-pub of Line Goes Up and think this could also be a great e-pub candidate
this is really great
as a meltdowner, it was excellent. its impossible for me to imagine myself as someone who isnt aware of the cult so i'll defer to others on that
I really enjoy all your videos, to the point that I've watched the 50 Shades series multiple times, even though I have no interest in those movies; and I've watched Line Goes Up probably half a dozen times. And I really enjoyed this one, too. That said... I do feel like TIFA spends quite a lot of time, perhaps too much, belaboring the conspiracy theory and anti-logic mindset of the apes. After a while, yeah, I get it. They'll come up with any crazy nonsense to justify their preexisting conclusions. The doc seems clearly aimed at folks who already understand how that kind of thinking works and are on board with the fact that the apes are delusional. So reinforcing the point that they're delusional a couple of dozen times with slight variation feels... excessive.
I watched it when it went public on YouTube. As someone who was aware of the initial short squeeze, and then stopped paying attention entirely, this was full of all sorts of new stuff. And it's all sorts of depressing. You brought up sovereign citizens at one point, and the idea that the US government would bankrupt itself to pay infinity dollars to whoever happens to hold GameStop stock has real sovcit moon logic to it.
Masterful!
Amazing work! Really enjoyed the final iteration, you did a great job explaining some of the denser aspects of investing that I didn't really grasp in the earlier versions. (Also, I was one of the folks that bought a Cohendolences card from you at PAX -- thanks so much again for taking the time to chat with me and my friend. It's been a treat to learn about your filmmaking process and see it in action via these iterations.)
I've really enjoyed the deep dives into absurd Internet cults, and would love to see more in the future. Has there been a consideration on delving into the AI/LLM hype bubble at all? It has all the techbro hype energy that crypto and NFTs did (at least, to me).
Wait - so my Patreon donation is just paying for a vacation at the Bellagio? I kid - this was fantastic as always.
Half an hour in and both entertained and informed! Another great one, Dan! I'm curious though, why didn't you put in YouTube chapter breaks?
great job champ
hell yeah right in time for NYFF (this counts as a festival premiere right)
Two and a half hours? Fine, have your $5 a month.
Only about 20 mins in but Its Very Good. Much improved and now (to me) has a very clear thematic connection to "In Search of a Flat Earth" and "Line Goes Up". Thanks Dan! This is a fun watch
I miss the little infomercial segment about naked short sales from the Aug draft (31:00) that or something in lieu of it. It was useful to understand why they came up with the theory in the first place
Took me two days to finish it (I couldn't quite finish the first draft you posted earlier). I have decades of (mostly very boring) investment experience, and it still took me multiple tries to figure out the Apes' rationale for some of their MOASS dreams. This is all phenomenal work, as always, and pretty grim at the end of it all, when you, once again, recharacterize the whole thing as gambling addiction, but with no chance of winning, w/o a grift (and even then).
So great! Honestly I went to that subreddit a few times and thought to myself "Wow! I have no idea what these guys are talking about. I really must be out of my depth here!" Now I'm just glad I stayed away. Have you considered doing a video about Star Citizen? It feels along similar lines to this and "The Future is a Dead Mall".
I can't seem to play it now
This is an extremely good video, and it has been a joy to see it improve over the past month. I gotta ask tho: Did you commission the music? I can find none of the 3 songs in the credits on Spotify, Bandcamp, or Youtube. If you didn't commission these, then these are some real deep cuts, and I have no clue how you came across them. Edit: Found two of them on soundcloud! But they've only been uploaded like 20 hours ago. Edit 2: Found all 3 on bandcamp. "These are very old demos now resurfacing because they are featured in Unfolding (sic) Ideas - This is Financial Advice documentary."
I only recently subbed to your Patreon and it's been incredibly satisfying to see this video come into shape! Thank you again so much for making such good videos for free.
I am extremely extremely excited
I have watched the various versions of this documentary more times than I would like to admit. This version is the best one. Great job.
You're the best internet documentarian I've ever come across! Proud to be a supporter of yours.
This version has a lot of subtle changes that I really like--the new infographic during Crystal's explanation is great, the additional acronym translations during the early segments are both helpful and hilarious, and I appreciated the slightly clearer focus on the phrase "cohencidences." There's only two minor things I'd like to critique; first there's a little audio skip during the intro to Crystal's explanation at [2:19]. Second, while I appreciate swapping out the red lighting for the darker mood lighting during the POV conspiracy explanation, I think that segment would really benefit from some more sinister music--like, comically sinister, to really underline the ridiculousness of the whole premise. Obviously that's just a stylistic opinion, and I don't think the current version is really harmed at all by the current version. Just a suggestion. There's a lot more I'd love to say, some great design choices I want to praise in detail, but I really need to go to bed. Thanks Dan, and congratulations on reaching the finish line! I look forward to watching the official release.
*chef kiss*
This is such a minor thing and I hesitated to even bring it up, but I figured I'd rather be the one to mention it than some asshat Youtube commenter who is just trying to be a jerk: At 3:44, a chart depicts GME's share price with labels for a few console releases. There are two issues: 1) The releases of the Wii U and PS4 were one year later than depicted (Wii U should be 2012 and PS4/Xbox should be 2013). 2) The "Xbox Series X/S" label is incorrect. The Xbox console released alongside the PS4 in 2013 was "Xbox One". The Xbox One S/X refreshes came in 2016/17 and Xbox Series X/S came out alongside the PS5 in 2020. (FWIW, I blame Microsoft marketing; the Xbox brand strategy is stupidly convoluted and confusing.) Love the video! Cheers!
Excellent video. It's SO WEIRD to me, how CONSPIRATORIAL and paranoid it all seems......but at the same time still faithful in the system to deliver MOAS. The conspiracy theories would make sense to me if it came from the perspective of why something didn't happen rather than waiting for a promised messiah.
Waiting for a messiah? Wow, that really put into perspective what this is for these people...
Hell yeah.
I really like the `the price is fake` strobe clip at ~37m
Yes I will be watching this both today and tomorrow thank you for asking.
All My Apes will be back after these messages…
Tomorrow is my wedding day. my fiance and I have been joking ALL MONTH that this video is going to come out on 9/30, both as a pseudo-wedding present, and because of course this is the one day we wont be able to watch it right away. Ty Dan Olson.
Sláinte!
What would have to happen to have ypu to talk about this on a CBC Radio interview?
Warm up the heat lamp it's time to start baking
There’s a video and maybe audio problem at 9:43
I think the slight glitch is intentional, but it is missing the "retro" video filter to make such a glitch plausible.
Okay, I wasn't sure if I was gonna start watching this NOW, but after Dan's first line with the "war" bit. I'm making a late night snack and getting started!
Time to watch this a third time
Same.
Sleep? What's that? I only know folding ideas.
