Does anyone know how to fly a plane? (new videos tomorrow)
Two new videos landing tomorrow!
In the meantime, I'm hoping someone here knows a little more about flying than I do. In this animation sequence, I have an aircraft doing a barrel roll. I've animated the gauges to the best of my ability, but would love it if you could spot any errors!
Thanks,
Gabe

No, but I like the upcoming vid dude. :D
Private pilot here with a few hours; shared the scene with a former instructor who is an aerobatic pilot. Here's some feedback: For the exact moment of the maneuver you shared, those instruments should show (from left-right, top-bottom): - airspeed indicator: Should be decreasing; - attitude indicator: Should point above the horizon, with the yellow bug (airplane) being perpendicular to the horizon. The banking indicator (bottom white arrow on the same instrument) should point at its max to the inside of the turn; - altimeter: Should be increasing; - mach number: Should be decreasing very slowly or not at all; - heading indicator: Turning to the same direction as the attitude indicator; - vertical speed indicator: peaking (since the snippet on the beginning of the vid shows the airplane 1/4 of the way into the barrel roll. Despite those, the animation is looking great! HMU if you want any breakdown on the info above, Gabe ;)
Airline pilot here, others have already mentioned error with the little triangle and heading indicator. I'll add that the heading should relatively consistent through out the whole maneuver. The nose also wouldn't have been that far below the horizon. In fact the hose should've been about 10-20 degrees above the horizon at the start of the roll. Airspeed is also way too high, and altitude drop is also way quick. All this is assuming this is the 707 roll.
Noted on all fronts, thank you!
Looks like the infamous Boeing 707 "selling planes" when Tex Johnston did a barrel roll in the Boeing 367-80 (Dash 80) prototype, looks great :) looking forward to the next videos, nebula original 👀 keep it up
I'm a private pilot. Form this short clip it looks like the plane is entering a spiral dive. Aside from what has already been mentioned regarding the attitude indicator and heading indicator, I would expect the altimeter to show the altitude loss with acceleration. As the airspeed increases, the altimeter needle should move slower at first, and then at ever-increasing speed. Also, I'm not sure about this particular instrument panel, but there should be a turn coordinator or a turn and slip indicator. Both of those have a "level" ball which shows whether the G-force is directed straight down as it should in a coordinated flight, or the airplane slipping/skidding. I see some resemblance of this ball under the attitude indicator, but nothing is moving there. This could be the case with a spiral dive, of course, but normally there is a bit of breathing at least
Thanks for the feedback! This should be close to a 1G maneuver but I will try to add a little floating/drifting to the slip indicator to make it realistic. Good call on the altimeter acceleration as well, going to tweak the curve now!
Professional pilot. The two white arrows at the top of the attitude indicator show the 0 degrees bank at the moment. The top arrow with the hashmarks (10, 20, 30 degrees bank respectively) should be static to the artificial horizon while the lower arrow moves with the yellow 'plane' in the middle. Also the heading indicator below it shows a turn to the right rather than a left like the other instruments show.
Fixed, thank you! No more breaking the laws of physics :)
Ooh, is this the famous "What do you think you're doing?!" "Selling airplanes" exchange?
(EDIT): I see what you're trying to do here. The thing that confused me is that the gyrocompass is moving in the opposite direction from what I am expecting given what I'm seeing on the attitude indicator.
Fixed, thank you!
