Big Results in our No Dig Garden plus Swine v Spuds - Episode 44

Hello beautiful people

Join us this week for a 2 part video at the Ramshackle Ranch. The first is a tour of our epic winter garden. We are absolutely amazed by the incredible results we've had over the last 3 months. We're loving the Kohlrabi. If you have any good recipes with this vegetable do let us know, it's been interesting to experiment with so far.

The second part of this video is a really lovely segment with Troy and our pigs. They are such charming characters and we just couldn't imagine farm life without them!

The cold has set in now and the fire is constantly burning here at the homestead. The frogs have arrived and we fall asleep with the window slightly cracked each evening to let in the fresh air in and to listen to their mating calls. They are getting particularly excited at the moment because we've had plenty of rainfall.

We hope wherever you are in the World you too are enjoying the change of the seasons. We'll check in for the Solstice in just under a week's time. I'm hoping by then I'll also have our Autumn harvest, preserving and winter gardening video ready for you.

As always thank you to all of you for your ongoing support and a big welcome to some new patrons that have joined the crew. We couldn't do this without you.

Troy and Pascale

Loved the video, guys! Just having the peace of the country, with all the work you do and seeing the fruits of that work now resonates well with the soul. I'm also sure that having a tub of kimchi that large is more satisfying than the smaller tub you had on the boat :) Looking forward to the next one :)

Haha, thanks Zac and yes, it is a very nice feeling having a few kilos of kimchi burbling away on the kitchen table.

Garden is amazing, I’m converted, my badly neglected vege garden is going to be transformed! Only five days before I head to Vanuatu to race to Southport in Queensland, very excited!

It really is such a low effort/ high return garden! Good luck on the race, hope you have a great crew.

Hi Pascale and Troy. Another great vid, thank you. Very much enjoyed your winter garden update. Hard to believe how well that’s going. The cabbages, even the smaller ones, look huge. Looks like the pigs and chickens do well out of the garden too. The pigs segment was pleasing, they are wonderful creatures to watch. They seem very happy and healthy, apart from the odd misadventure with electricity… It’s great to hear that those would-be waste streams can be diverted and used to help the pigs remain happy and well fed. Your physical location seems quite strategic… all those local market producers and their waste streams that can be put to good use. Well done.

Thanks Vince. The producers are usually very happy to have that waste taken away and go to good use. They are all interested to hear what we do with it. In particular, the brewers appreciate that we are lacto- fermenting the spent grain as that is their area of specialisation. They also enjoy getting some fresh goat milk as proof of concept!
