Dealing with loss on the farm - Episode 29
Good morning everyone
I must say I am feeling much better this week and was able to start working on the video on the weekend. I ended up having Covid for a second round and it took me quite a while to get back on my feet. Thank you all for your kind words of support earlier this month it meant a lot to have your understanding. Troy managed to avoid it this time, the lucky bugger!
In this episode we cover a really difficult week for us last year. Losing animals has been one of the hardest things for us here on the homestead and the spoiled prosciutto well that was just the final blow! But it's not all doom and gloom, there are plenty of things to be happy about in the video, including some new additions and, of course, plenty of goat antics.
We hope you enjoy it.
With gratitude
Pascale and Troy

We've been enjoying a month in Arizona and just now seeing this. I'm struck by your transition from sea life to farm life and your success in both. Your so inspiring to both! Well Done!
Thanks so much David! Whilst there's been many failures we certainly celebrate the successes. This morning we had 5 more baby Australorp chicks out and about with a new proud mum. Soooo cute
Like the old saying says “ if you have livestock you have dead stock”. Unfortunate fact of life.
Sad but true. Fortunately no fox has returned around the dwellings on the property. Jet has certainly earned her keep!
Pascale & Troy. You both have done wonders with the farm and animals in such a short time frame. Thank you so much for sharing the videos ... we feel like distant members of the family.
Thank you very much. We take that as a major compliment as that is just how we want you all to feel when we film and edit these little shows. A family update!

Loved it guys, we just love seeing the growth in the farm.
Now summer is here, wherever we can spare the water the growth is almost visible by the hour! The tomatoes are particularly ambitious to take on the world.
Thanks for another lovely video. I really enjoy getting to see all the progress you two have made. Amazing to see the changes in just one year; you guys seem to have boundless energy!
There have been days where we have crashed up quite hard against those bounds!
Pascale, glad to hear you are back on your feet after a second battle with Covid! And glad to hear Troy didn't get sick.
Troy is convinced that global immunology needs to investigate Emu Export Lager as a possible safety factor with regards to infection. He and another friend emerged unscathed from the gathering that seems to have spread this case after a bit of a rowdy get-together.
Poor Hugo..the indignity of it all, loosing his manhood over the world-wide-web! The lad is so handsome and such a good dancer the ladies would have no doubt bleated their little hearts out to sire his young. I use rubber bands all the time in the kitchen, am I going to need counseling? ✍️)))
Yes, it was cruel to let out his secret in such a fashion but his dancing career is entirely intact (unlike his scrotum). With regards the rubber bands, if you keep them at bench level, things should remain fairly uneventful.
Such a great video this week - I am so sorry to hear about the losses too, but life moves in this way. A ramshackle farm like yours has great joys and successes, but also the hard times too when we learn that life is far bigger than we can even fathom.Watching Hugo get castrated was so hard for me! But it also makes sense for the farm and for his well-being. And as Troy said - they only get you into trouble 😆
Thank you Emma. I think Hugo's experience was almost as hard for us but we did have some pain relief medication for him on the first day and now, he is a pleasure to have around. An intact male goat can be...problematic and really do have some unpleasant traits from humans' point of view.
Sure hope Pascale is doing better. Troy gets the comment of the week award with what he told Hugo about "them" just causing trouble! LMAO!!! Thanks for sharing all of life on the range.
Yes, thankyou. All better but still a bit more tired than usual at the end of the day. Hugo doesn't know just how lucky he is ;)
Wonderful to see the bounty in your gardens, and the larder! Sad to loose some of your hard won meat provisions, but you have accomplished so much in such a short time, and now have much more experience for next season's curing. Well done!
Oh it was a very sad affair although we did get off quite lightly all things considered. The maggots followed the bone quite closely and while it was an incredibly revolting job, we did manage to salvage quite a bit. It is a different product to one where the whole leg is allowed to cure for 10 months but we are grateful all for any wins.
Very interesting, thought provoking episode in your evolving lifestyle. I do appreciate your honesty in all these, and the willingness to be frank and real with your content. I admit though, I had to skip the rubber band thingy on the goat part. It looks like there is much to be thankful for at the ramshackle ranch, and the work you two have put in is really showing. TY for taking the time to share with us, around the world...as I shiver in 34 deg F weather.
Thank you Joseph. I think given the choice, Hugo might have skipped the banding part too, but he seems to be very happy now and is a fun part of the scene. A young male goat is quite a handful and develop some pretty unsavoury habits. Stay warm!
Hey guys :) Glad you're feeling better Pascale, COVID isn't really fun to have. One thing I heard from a farmer once - "You have livestock, and then you have dead stock", which I guess is one of those things that happens on a farm, no matter the size. But it's difficult to have happen all the same. Also, loved how the food turned out on Christmas Day! Did a solid job with the ham there, well done! Looking forward to the next one!
Thanks Zac and no fun; it's a particularly tedious bug. Very drawn out while it lasted but things are pretty much back to normal (whatever that means around here!) We take consolation that we mostly learn from our mistakes but losses due to our fault are a bit galling.
Wow! Really sorry about all the losses... heartbreaking for sure. 😢 On the brighter side, the happier content made for a very enjoyable episode. 😎 I was really amused that in the initial footage of Hugo's Elastration, you both seemed rather careful with choice of words (i.e. - scrotum and testicles). However, when Pascy was examining him later, she just used the good old terminology that everyone understands... and referred to Hugo's "balls". 🤣 Perfect, Pascy!! 👍 We don't need airs and graces on the Ramshackle Ranch!😉 Thanks again for this episode, I found it most enjoyable! Lots of love to you both Paul
Haha yes, the real-talk is always close at hand around here though we thought it proper to maintain a little decorum for Hugo's date with destiny.
I see on the news that there are fires somewhere over near you, Not too close I hope?
There were a few about half an hour away but the wind was favourable and they were under control quite promptly. It's lightning season now so everyone is at attention.
