3 months on our 9 homestead with 38 animals under our care - Episode 12
Good morning patrons
It’s more additions to the homestead this week welcoming our cats, Kuma and Jinx, also known as “the domestic terrorists” (a very apt description Mr Kranz), and 12 little Australorp (Australian Orpington) chicks to the brood. We hope you enjoy our first interactions with them, as well as, the myriad of other happenings on the Ramshackle Ranch.
Filmed around the winter solstice there’s some wins and some failures which, no doubt, is all part of the journey as we attempt to work towards being more self sufficient on the farm.
As always sending our best wishes to you and your loved ones from the chilly and muddy South West of Australia.
Troy and Pascale
PS - Still working on a title a thumbnail for the video's public release on YouTube this weekend. Any ideas would be most appreciated!

Hi guys, I keep quite a few chooks, all heritage breeds (I have a couple of incubators). Finding new recipes for laying fowl is not easy. I have found a mincer a very handy tool for tuff old chooks , patties and sausages. I have two pressure cookers, one standard kitchen size and a large preserving one (good for turkeys geese or a few chooks) they come in very handy. On another subject, I am looking forward in anticipation for a cook book, hint hint.😊. Ps not a cat person but love your moggies.
Do you use extra fat to make your chicken sausages Ron? I think a pressure cooker is an absolute must and moreso if old chooks are still regular menu item! We are looking for an old one in good nick for canning right now too.
Thanks for another episode to feed my addiction :)) Always feels wonderful to spend time with you two.. Tabby kit-cats on par are one of my favorite personalities. Amazing how far you have come in three months. Good Night. ✍️))
Those kittens are high performance critters. Endlessly entertaining but we also now have to train them that food on benches is out of bounds. (Wish us luck...)
Lorraine wants to know when the “meat up” is going to be! 😉. Wish we could get to Oz for a visit. Maybe someday. Enjoying the new adventure. Thank you!
It will be a fine day when we can throw a long table dinner with mostly our own food and booze. We had a birthday recently where we provided the meat and cider!
Fantastic video and amazing what you have achieved in just 3 months! It must soon be time to make Free-range Farmstead T-shirts! We wear our Free-range Sailing T-shirts daily - farmstead ones would be a welcome addition to the wardrobe!
We've been needing some Free Range gumboots lately with our winter rain. I think a shirt with Ramshackle Ranch emblazoned across it might offer possibilities!
Man you guys are amazing, love watching
:)
Hard to believe it's been three months already, until you count up the animals and see all the progress you've made! Wonderful to see all the critters, the new arrivals, as well the veterans. The segment of Pascy explaining what's up in the kitchen between 14:50 to 15:09 has thumbnail potential.
People keep telling us that we'll be busy once spring arrives! I think with a pause in animal acquisitions we may actually get a breather😄
