Boat Life. Lightning Storms at Sea - Episode 183
G'day folks
We all know that Mirrool is just a little boat but, no matter what size vessel you find yourself on, sooner or later you are going to find yourself in a big sea under a big sky in a big storm.
We show some of the precautions that we took that allow us to take mother nature's moods in our stride and enjoy the spectacle. As usual we promise fast sailing, good fishing and fine food along with a unique light show.
Thanks once again to you all whether you've been with us for years or just joined. Don't forget our discounted merchandise is always available to you on the top of the Patreon Wall so no need to worry about time running out.
Our respect and thanks
Troy and Pascale

Hello , your productions are incredible and the way you both explain things , sharing your experiences and knowledge is so enjoyable. Thank you Troy & Pascale Best regards
You're welcome David. Welcome to the crew!
Another great episode. Re humming, I’ve used a fender above the spreaders with some success. I love rigging hum but my previous yacht also had a mast pumping problem too. Makes for a bad night’s sleep. Fair winds, loving your WA travels. ⛵️😊
yes I don't think that would be enjoyable. the low slow hum I find quite meditative! We have figured out a way to remove the sound on one of our sound recorders also when I am doing voice overs which is great. Probably no need to put a fender on high yet!
Always a treat to watch FRS. I'm torn between waiting for just the right moment to watch vs diving right in as soon as I see it pop up. Its ALL good :-)
maybe just watch it twice!? ;-)
Fantastic episode! Loved the spirited sailing, of course. The yellow fin tuna harvest was well done, along with the processing, and especially you both enjoy the fruits. That looked so tasty! I try very hard to avoid lightning. Several times I've been caught out in it, and then try to shelter around taller stuff. Hard to imagine being the tallest thing for many miles around, especially with an aluminum mast! I'll have to evaluate how to achieve a make shift faraday cage, but don't think I have any cookware on board at present that would accommodate my cell phone and tablet (or and oven).
Thanks Scott always a pleasure to read your comments! Microwaves are good as a Faraday cage if you have one on your boat? Or maybe an old metal biscuit tin!?
Enjoyed this one very much. Love seeing your team work guys & what we learn from your journey. That sunset was magical 😍. Cheers 🍻
I Am So Jealous!! I have never been to the Abrolhos.. that anchorage looks spot on.. your videos are keeping us sane here is locked down NSW ... All the best :)
I'm sure the artist in Sammy would love the colours of the landscape here.
Have we told you lately how much we enjoy you two and your adventures? All our love and best wishes from Nashville. 👍👍
Another superb vid. The video as you sailed was beautiful, all of the footage at the Abrolhos Islands was pretty amazing. Western Australia looks like paradise. Who would have thunk it, a soup pot as a Faraday cage! Take your time Free Rangers, I am enjoying every drop of WA.
Yes, we think our home state has many treasures for the adventurer and lovers of wide open spaces. Even if those spaces have the odd electrical skyshow.
Great episode 👍Looking forward to the cookbook! How about a Fishing guide from Troy?
Pascale knowledge of cooking is far more comprehensive than my knowledge of fishing.
Wow, that was some lightning! Anyway, great episode, thanks guys🙌
Very enjoyable episode that went by far too quickly. Regarding the rigging hum, I have some experience as an audio engineer, and removing background hum is actually quite simple, once you know how. But to guide you through the process without getting too technical, it would be helpful to know what software you usually use to process your audio.
We have found that Audacity is a very good program and the noise reduction feature simple to use. We do grab a sample for it to work on when we record onboard as there are quite a few unwanted noises on a boat.
Great lightning shots! We put a doona over our Journalists and their laptops while they lay their voice on the road. Gives us a break from them as well as cutting out unwanted noise! We don't have dyneema rigging in our cars though...
The droning of our rigging is quite musical compared to a journalist and it has never given us bad news yet!
Thanks, loved the images of the lightening, very Singapore... Love the look of the region and the great sailing, it looks like the west coast is a well kept secret. The majority seem to head up the east coast to the GBR. Cheers
WA is deemed to be a difficult place to sail as there are fewer places to anchor and plenty of days of big swell. The rewards of the place include the challenges rather than exist in spite of them.
great episode. Lovely rich colours captured in the storm and enjoying how much your channel is about the water and the weather as much as the boat.
The Good, The Bad, The never ugly!
