New Deck Grip, Boom, Stanchions and Galley Hatch Install - Episode 165
G'day patrons
Hooray! Our first episode after our 2 months leave to sail home is up.
This week it's all hands on deck to get our boat ready to go. We install our galley hatch in its new raised mount, apply Kiwi Grip to the decks, fit our new boom and stanchions. For a bit of fun we also strength test the makeshift fiberglass repair we made on our old boom at our mate Pete's shed.
It's funny even after all the miles we've traveled since then it still feels like just yesterday. This episode was mostly filmed over the last few weeks of January where we were fortunate enough to have plenty of dry weather to get the deck grip on.
Please enjoy!
Troy and Pascale

Such an amazing refit! Can't wait to sail away with you on the next leg :)
You keep saying you're not endorsing any products but they had better give you a deal! I just ordered some kiwi grip. As recommended by free range sailing!
Great to see you finishing off. You put a lot of thought in to every little step. Bravo.
The same type of mariner that leaves his halyard loose at the Marina also runs his cheapo super loud generator in quiet anchorages right around sundown at the lease opportune moment for hours at end. DAMF.
Clanging hayards are part of the music of the marina. You have to make peace with it or you'll go nuts. Same with groaning fenders, seagulls, waves slapping under the stern...........etc...
This post is from x no. of days ago when you were getting ready to depart SA. Hope you had a great sail!!! Hi Guys, it's like I have had the pleasure of meeting you personally! Are you still in South Aus? You look to be in really good health. I can't imagine doing multiple hours/days at break neck speed, you'll have to record visuals! Do you know what your hull speed is Troy?
Great episode as per usual, love all the tips we have gained from you both, cheers 🍻
U bolt drill guide!! Game changer!!
I don't know that I was actively missing my Pascy and Troy "Fix". But right now I have the biggest smile adorning my face! I've missed this. Thanks! Tim
So happy to be back bringing y'all videos!
For you kids out there.. never use your hand as a hammer. Pascale knows.
Thanks, Troy & Pascale! Great video! I have really enjoyed watching the refit videos! Most informative!
PS.. Which video was the head holding tank in??
I'm afraid we didn't do a video on that. Here is a link to our Patron Only post with a diagram of the holding tank: https://www.patreon.com/posts/diagram-of-our-30027134
Thanks heaps guys So glad I bought a Clansman ... You have both been the greatest help help & inspiration.
Very Very Timely video.. I installed my new stanchions and liflines yesterday and dont like the triangular bases.. Was going fix them in with my 6mm inserts nuts that I am using on everything now.. ( got the S/S Insert nuts from ANZOR in QLD Oz here in the email trevor.mckenzie@anzor.com.au ) Will be looking out for the smart looking ones you have installed on Mirool.. Don't worry Coquille has a totally different Arch & Hard Dodger so Mirool wont have a twin sister.... I have been missing the videos & Sammy has the heaps up on the kiwi grip intall..... ( She is the head painter) :)
ANZOR is a great source for those inserts - we were going to use them but we were able to get them locally in Tasmania. Another patron BlueDogOz found another supplier here: https://www.thefastenerfactory.com.au/stainless-steel-csk-timber-insert-a4-316-m6-right-10pc
Welcome back! And glad you folks had some time off after working so hard on the boat. Excellent video as always and as an engineer, I especially liked the ultimate load testing on the boom. Good show.
Happy Days. Mirool and her stalwart crew are once again part of our lives! You have been missed my friends!
Wonderfully done! I really admire your problem solving. You consistently end up with simple, elegant, and cost effective solutions!
Great comeback after your 2 months off guys!...I really have enjoyed watching your refit videos and picked up some good tips for upgrades to Ngarlaa when the time comes. Your boom fix in Sydney obviously worked very well Troy :).
Thanks Geoff a couple more refit videos and then we are off sailing again, looking forward to bringing the next installments to you very soon.
Great video. Thanks guys🙌 I was wondering if you would give your choice of anti-slip paint paint a few words? It is a one-component paint, right?
We used a product called Kiwi-Grip. It's amazing stuff. Water soluble, very easy to use and easy to clean up afterwards we used warm soapy water. Yes it's a one component paint. You apply it thick with a trowel as we did in the video and then roll out to your desired finish. There's a bit more about it here: https://www.pyiinc.com/KiwiGrip/aboutkiwigrip.html
Just a great video. And I love the way you explain the things you do.
I suspected that boom repair would be stronger than than the boom itself. Good to see that validated... I'll eventually need to redo my non-skid, and the Kiwi grip seems like a great way to go... Great little trick for drilling accurate holes for those inserts!! Wish I'd thought of that for a piano project involving a similar application... I find I'm wondering if I secured my halyards properly after sailing today, or if they'll make a ruckus in the wind predicted for tomorrow ;)
I agree, given competent craftsmanship (Troy is certainly in that category) the repair is somewhat like a broken bone, as mostly when the break heals it is stronger than the original bone on either side of the break
Well now all is right in the world :)
