Dismasted - Episode 154

It's here! We remove our old stainless steel rig, start work on the mast, discuss replacing our rig with Dyneema, show you our new rig's light weight and durable components and have a yarn with Peter Greig while he splices the Dyneema for Mirrool.

Here's the link to the brief Q & A with Peter Greig and Wichard  Pacific: https://www.wichard.com.au/dyneema-rigging-qa-peter-greig/

We've already mentioned the article in a previous post but I included it above in case you didn't see it earlier.

The shift to focusing our weekly videos on Mirrool's exterior feels like a welcome change. While we still remain hauled out at the yard, it's nice to look back and see how far we've come!

Looking forward to bringing you so many more.

With gratitude

Pascale

peter seems a bit of a great find, where is he in Tassie ?, i can not find any contact details for him on the web at all, thanks

He came down from Melbourne, though he is Port Douglas based, to do some work with RM Marine and got caught here by the bat flu. I think Peter gets more than enough work organically without advertising any more.

Thank you Pascale and Troy. Great vid, very informative. Like the perspective you shared about managing risks and the unknown. Pete the Rigging guru was very interesting to hear about.

Managing risk and being aware that we often overestimate our abilities is a key to incident free remote area travel I think. Most of my jobs in primary industry were in the deadliest sectors of the Australian workforce according to statistics and perhaps that instills a beneficial thoughtfulness. I have quite a few friends no longer with us sadly.

So happy for you both that you found Pete. Good to see his head again. Thanks for your awesome content.✌️

Isn't he a ripper

Hello Pascale and Troy a wonderful and informative video again! Have you seen the Rigging Doctor on YouTube? He was a boat rigger and switched his older and larger boat over to Dynema also and he has done a number of videos on his rig. I have a few questions, are you doing anything about all of the holes in the mast that you now have after removing all of the hardware? Could you give us a little cost comparison between a Re rigging in stainless compared to Dynema? When I pulled my mast 2 years ago the rigger told me it would be 2X the cost to do in Dynema, not sure if I believe that. Thanks, Ben S/V DAWN

We don't watch the RD but he did write a very good article that is exactly our experience, though obviously the numbers are different: https://www.riggingdoctor.com/life-aboard/2016/11/7/cost-of-conversion With regards the holes, we cleaned them out, countersunk them to increase the surface area and filled them with thickened epoxy. The very large ones, we filled with polysulphide to prevent wind from whistling through them. This is cosmetic and doesn't strengthen the mast in any way. The cost saving in dyneema for us was in not having to buy all new rigging screws and top plates (which have to be replaced to do a thorough job). Each $150-200 screw is replaced by 2x $24 friction rings as an example. The materials are certainly cheaper but we did have to pay Peter for his time. We regard that as an investment rather than a cost though and I feel like I can replace components in our rig myself at a future date.

Another great refit video. I love them as much as the sailing and exploring. Great job guys.

I think we might like the sailing ones a little more! We are learning plenty so we hope we can properly pass a bit of that on for you guys.

Awesome informative video as per usual guys, when we get out bigger yacht Dyneema is the way we'll go 👍.

T
Troy and Pascale · November 6, 2020

We like the fact that we didn't have to replace all of the rigging screws and cheek plates. Both very expensive components as well as heavy (especially on larger sailing boats) and irreplaceable at sea. Friction rings and splices are very versatile and carrying spares is no hardship.

Fantastic to see the Dyneema rig taking shape! Peter is the sort of person I love to find when dealing with critical systems. Not only do you end up confident in the integrity of the end results, but you get a priceless education as the project unfolds. I hope to refit my rig at some point, and love the idea of Dyneema. Sadly, I'm more than a little out of Peter's territory....

T
Troy and Pascale · November 6, 2020

You are spot on about the education Scott. Watching a professional excercising their craft is a great way to soak up good work habits in an area as well, rather than bumbling through and perhaps ingraining poor techniques into a skill-set. Pete is also cranky in a good natured way which appeals to the ship's engineer in me!

Great intro to dyneema rigging. Another “something to think about”. I’m already using Dyneema soft shackles on the boat, but have been using Dyneema as my hammock suspension for over 8 years. Great stuff! When I have to replace my standing rigging, I’ll have to find a Dyneema guru like Peter to rig mine! Marrool is truly a work of art. Strong work (again) to the two of you.

T
Troy and Pascale · November 6, 2020

Thanks Doc. We also have been using soft shackles and perhaps they are a gateway drug to rigging with Dyneema! As we get to talk to Peter, some new possibilities for rigging alternatives are becoming clear and our spare parts locker is going to be simplified and weigh less. We'll cover all that at a later date.

Oh good, I surely need distraction today. I have to get a new drivers license! I hope I have enough tonnage of papers to keep the bureaucrats happy ;-). And Oh Yeah, there seems to be a "disturbance in the force" here. I may have to watch this multiple times! Thanks as always, love you guys....

Impressive job on the mast and great on the safety gear. Now it feels like WE are protecting OUR investment 😉

Great job guys. I am looking to replace the rigging on Ngarlaa with Dyneema once I can get back to her after lockdown. I am looking forward to seeing how the new rigging looks in the future.

T
Troy and Pascale · November 3, 2020

The adjustment required at first may be the main complication but yes, I think it will look very smart and improve our performance considerably.

DA Musical HQ · November 3, 2020

Hey you two! The rigging is going to be incredible! No more corrosion! What a pleasure. Going to suggest the same when my bro redoes his rigging. Can't wait for the adventures to unfold soon. Best wishes from 'lockdown lite' in Berlin. Cheers you two!

Troy and Pascale · November 3, 2020

Looking forward to the more flexible sail plan too. A real safety improvement.

I am wondering how the weather has been ( you are going into Spring), and the temperature? Will your National Park’s be open when you are ready to sail? I surely have missed you guys cruising and I would imagine that you do to! The Pandemic has not been kind to any of us, please be safe out there in your endeavors. Cheers!

T
Troy and Pascale · November 3, 2020

Hi Jim. The weather is beautiful at the moment. A balmy 25 degrees. Really feeling like summer is just around the corner so we are super busy trying to get everything done on Mirrool - so we can explore Tasmania on the water some more. The National Parks are open again and some travel between COVID free states in Australia is allowed. Our home state (WA is still being very strict with re-entry from anywhere so when we sail home next year we may have to apply for a special exemption. Time will tell. Hope you and your family are safe and well. Pascale
