The Lobster Hunter - Episode 137

Join us for our last week in Port Davey where for the first time I successfully catch lobster by hand! We also visit a beach with enormous Aboriginal middens, Troy talks about our weather set up with our shortwave radio and I cook us up a tasty lobster soup.

Please enjoy!

Now you're a Free Ranger! Pascale is the bravest of us two. There was no way I was getting in there with no wetsuit;) Welcome to the crew CG.

Classic FRS Free Ranging! Pascale I love the joy you get from/put into your cooking!

Taking the care to cook something really nice with something hand caught feels like closing the circle and showing due appreciation to the crayfish. Stay up-beat Tim, you're in our thoughts.

what a great video guys , loved it! Since we can't get to our boat OS we have been inspired by you and bought a compass 29. Can't wait to get on it in QLD. thank you again for showing us again that you don't need a big boat to enjoy the world. P.S don't come to Victoria its just so disorganised at the moment with Covid. safe travels. K&M

Those little Compass are great looking boats. We look forward to hearing your thoughts on her handling. Yes, just got the Victorian news on ABC yesterday in the wood shop. Just a mess.

We haven't used any Aussie urchins but that sounds like it would be a really rich base for a stock. We'll try it out in spring when we sail out there away from people again. Heres an idea for you Dion- Paua lasagna! Strips of raw Paua where you would normally use pasta. Everything else is the same. We haven't seen any Gt. Whites. To be honest, we both are still pretty happy about that too. We are comfortable with tropical sharks like Tiger and even Bullies but Whites are still an unknown Boogeyman. We do avoid diving around drop-offs near seal colonies as that seems to be ringing the dinner bell a little too vigorously, but we think a G.W that ventures into gently sloping shallower water is more likely to be curious rather than out full tilt dangerous.

Oh wow that cray fish bisque looked so good Pascal. Have you tried a Paua (abalone ) risotto? I use 3-4 kina roe (urchin ) in the base stock then add saute paua when it comes off the heat. So yum. Do you guys have many run in's with great whites in some of those places you hunt? I loved this video. Was fantastic.

It really pleases us to think that what we pass on will make someones adventures just a bit better and you'll have happy cause to think of us again down the road. Its the vibe of the thing!

The lobster dish, and the soup looked so delicious, as did the abalone! HF SSB radio is wonderful! I have an older receiver that should still do the trick. I've had lots of different amateuar radio gear in the past. I used to run a Winlink station. My callsign is K4SET. I may get the boat set up with a more serious radio at some point, but the little receiver i have will suffice for now.. In addition to the weather broadcast, weather FAX can also be helpful. If there is a headphone jack on your receiver you should be able to connect it to your laptop and read the WXFAX with free, or very affordable software...

T
Troy and Pascale · July 7, 2020

We used to use Weather fax HF by Black cat systems for fax decoding, but their latest edition that is a paid product is not as good as their intro free edition! We are looking at other laptop software now and will post our findings here.

Thank you for the non-technical instruction on how to tune into ssb, so many people that I have met miss what they are looking for by scanning through the frequencies too fast, and do not realise that the fine-tuning is essential to be able to actually hear properly. I haven't listened to any ssb for the 19 Years that I have lived in Cornwall, as I never did set up my Amateur radio 'Shack' here and my big Yaesu all Band Transceiver (transmitter/receiver) has been stored in what turned out to be damp conditions (BIG Ouch) along with all my other gear. As you say, any long piece of insulated wire will do as an antenna, the thickness doesn't really matter (except for rigging strength), just the length. Another wonderful video demonstrating the Free Range lifestyle that we love you for, hunting for food with your bare hands when possible, good simple hearty recipes and cooking methods but with quality results. Thank you both.

We have a secret weapon when it comes to non-technical radio explanations; A not-too-technical understanding of the technology! Having said that, I'm often surprised by how many yachties haven't a working knowledge of these little radios and think they need insulators and a permanent installation to receive HF. Sorry to hear about the outcome of damp vs expensive transceiver. A most unfair contest.

Another interesting and entertaining video. After watching Troy's tech talk I ordered the Tecsun PL600. For NZ$150 delivered from AliExpress I thought it was good value. Thanks for the idea.

T
Troy and Pascale · July 3, 2020

We hope you find it a good little radio. I will say, that the operation and channel tuning isn't very intuitive, compared to our previous unit. Sitting down with the instructions and running through things was a requirement for me at least and sometimes I still get a little confused with the selection process after a hiatus of tuning it in. If you have any questions, you know where to find us Mike. Good luck!

As always most enjoyable. Jealous about your seafood diet given that Crays are around $130 a kg here, when in season. Regarding the Union 36 it is a most interesting boat, but I pity Pasc having to manually operate the anchor winch, and clearly there will be enough fiddly work to keep Troy happy for some time to come. The price seems good but then it is 40 odd years old. Self tacking jib ? Never-the-less clearly a good boat, a canoe stern like Marool ?

T
Troy and Pascale · July 3, 2020

Wow, that is quite a price-tag for a bit of lobster. Pascale is in no danger of using a different anchor winch any time soon, especially with the birthday Mirrool is getting at the moment! We are splashing a bit of varnish around a the moment, but with a sound epoxy base under it to keep that fiddly work to a minimum!

Stassen Josef · July 3, 2020

Pascale is a really tough woman. Did she wear gloves when she catch the crayfish?

T
Troy and Pascale · July 3, 2020

Gloves were definitely a requirement but quite thin rubber on the grips. Tough indeed!

Hi guys

Ron Prince · July 3, 2020

Thanks guys, loved it as usual. I’m a bit jealous of your cold weather.

T
Troy and Pascale · July 3, 2020

We are making the most of experiencing a winter again! The years in the tropics was just hot or hot and very sweaty. The excellent fishing is pretty good compensation though...

J
Jeff · July 3, 2020

really enjoyed this video. Again we’ll balanced between technical, cooking, and life/exploring. what type stove do you have? oven?

T
Troy and Pascale · July 3, 2020

Hi Jeff, our cooker is a Maxi brand 2 burner spirit stove. They have been discontinued and getting replacement parts has become a bit of a challenge as more boats are fitted with propane services. It doesn't have an oven which is a bit of a pain as well as its low heat output, relative to petroleum based fuels, per gram burned.

C
Chris Potts · July 3, 2020

Love it. P, your lobster soup looks life-changing!

T
Troy and Pascale · July 3, 2020

Haha- it certainly turned around a cold and gray afternoon!

J
Joseph Orr · July 3, 2020

Most excellent. Love the food segment. But my favorite is of course the technical radio discussion. I'm a sucker for cool electronics.

T
Troy and Pascale · July 3, 2020

That little radio is really a great bit of kit and we have been asked quite a bit about how to use them to receive weather warnings. I'm surprised they're not more widespread.
